Alvin Shuman, also known as "Poppy", 96, of Hoboken passed away early in the morning on March 25th, 2021 in his home.
Alvin was born on July 16, 1924 to Rufus and Mattie Shuman. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Elizabeth Belle "Bebee" Shuman; a son, Alvin Stanley Shuman; his grandson, Matthew Alvin Shuman; great great granddaughter, Sophia Raelyn Pap; and two siblings, Donald Shuman and Nevada Dixon.
He is survived by his children, Nanette Krom, Barbara (Ernest) Lee, and Sarolyn Douglas; a daughter-in-law, Mary Shuman; nine grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren; and a great great granddaughter.
Throughout his life, he held many occupations: farmer, surveyor, bus driver, logger, and church planter. However, he is known for his love of gardening, fishing, and splitting wood. He helped start Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Oak Hill Baptist, and Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Additionally, Poppy is remembered for his bravery in fighting in World War II. He was in the 741st tank battalion B company, which landed on Omaha Beach, which is famously known as D-Day.
The family will hold a celebration of life ceremony in July to remember him and his wife.
