IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Anne Camilla (Cappelmann)
Donaldson
April 6, 1933 – February 7, 2026
Anne Cappelmann Donaldson of Jesup died Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Marshes Edge on St. Simons Island, Georgia, following an extended illness and under the care of Heartland Hospice.
Anne was born in Columbia, South Carolina, to Sara and George Scherer Cappelmann, Sr. She graduated from Jesup High School in 1951, then earned three degrees from the University of Georgia: BFA in commercial art, master’s in education (MAE), and Education Specialist degree (EDS). She was invited to become a member of the Honor society, Phi Kappa Phi and also pledged a sorority, ADPI.
In 1964, while her husband John Donaldson, was backfield coach at the University of Georgia, Anne was commissioned by new head coach Vince Dooley to design a "forward-looking" logo for his team's helmets. Her finished design, the iconic Georgia "G" , has been the official symbol for UGA Athletics for over 60 years and remains one of the most recognizable symbols in college sports.
During her thirty years as a teacher in Jesup, Georgia, GA, Gainesville, FL, and Athens, Georgia, and one summer teaching at the University of Georgia, Anne was selected as “STAR Teacher” multiple times. Her art students were recognized on the state and national levels and her Future Problem Solving teams were often state champions. She also served on the State Board of Education for the Gifted.
Serving as youth advisor in The Episcopal Church for several years in Jesup, she later taught Sunday School and worked in the women's auxiliary in Gainesville, FL, and was a member of the Women's Club in Jesup and the Junior League in Gainesville, GA. While living and teaching in Athens, she was very active with The University of Georgia Art Department. She always appreciated time spent with family and friends and enjoyed watching football, fishing, water skiing, dancing, reading, bridge and golf.
Preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents, Sara and George Scherer Cappelmann Sr.; and her brother, George Scherer Cappelmann Jr., Anne is survived by her sister, Sara Cappelmann Camacho of Savannah, and many relatives in North and South Carolina.
A memorial service will be held at 11am, Saturday, February 14, 2026, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 745 Palm Street, in Jesup.
