Jim Sampson, 94, passed away at Golden Isles Hospice Tuesday night, November 17, 2015 with family surrounding him. His beautiful wife, Marie, preceded him in 2009.
Jim lived a full and exciting life and was the true definition of a southern gentleman. He answered our nation's call during World War II and flew B-25s, B-17s and B-29s. Jim loved to fly (over 5,000 hours) and remained on active duty for over 20 years. His Air Force assignments took him to Georgia, Florida, Texas, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma and Alaska. He also had memorable overseas assignments to Spain and Portugal.
Afterwards, Jim worked ten years with Lockheed Aircraft in Marietta, Georgia. Most of that time was as the flight systems safety engineer for the C-5A aircraft program. Later, Jim decided to strike out on his own as a residential general contractor. He was very successful with his new career and at age 60 decided it was time to retire, enjoy travel, and his family.
Jim was a skilled and competitive golfer. He was fortunate to learn and play golf with his friend and Golf Pro, Davis Love II. Jim continued to play a great game of golf until the age of 92, shooting 8 to 10 strokes below his age.
Jim is survived by his son, Dale Sampson and wife, Sallie of Brunswick, Georgia; his daughter, Janet Bartolotta and husband, Manny, of Alexandria, Virginia; and his son, Michael Sampson of Brunswick, Georgia. His grandchildren, Rob Davie and his wife, Jennifer, of Blacksburg, Virginia; Chris Davie and his wife, Brandy, of Nashville, Tennessee; Sara Bockey and her husband, Chris, of Phoenix, Arizona; David Sampson of Nashville, Tennessee; Wesley Sampson and his wife, Rebecca, of Little River, South Carolina; and Kimberly Sampson of Marietta, Georgia. Jim was also blessed with five great grandchildren, Grayson, Henry and Haley Davie of Blacksburg, Virginia; Hannah and Madeline Davie of Nashville, Tennessee.
