BETTY LOUISE GOSS, née Irwin, passed away on August 12, 2014. She was 89. A native of Atlanta, Betty married her high school sweetheart, Roy Goss, in 1946, and the couple moved to Saint Simons Island, a place they both loved. There Betty taught Sunday School at the First Baptist Church and raised their two daughters doing all the things that involves, from making clothes and unforgettable birthday cakes to driving the girls to music lessons, band activities, and sporting events. She found time to become certified in interior design and also to study art, a love of which she inherited from her father. In 1974, when the family moved to Savannah for work reasons, Betty and Roy were among the first to purchase a lot at the Landings on Skidaway Island, where they proceeded to design and build a home that remained the family's base until the end of their lives. Married for 67 years, the couple loved to travel, and they made a number of tours abroad and educational excursions around the country, some with the Elder Hostel program. Betty's sense of style and graciousness were apparent throughout her life, from her elegant dress to her genteel manners. She spent her last months on her beloved St. Simons Island. She is survived by her daughters, Glenda Dawn Goss and Angela Carin Goss and her grandchildren, Anna Elizabeth Thompson and James Roy Thompson. A Graveside service is being held Saturday, August 16, at 10:00 a.m. at Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens on St. Simons Island. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial tributes be made to the Saint Simons Land Trust.
