IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charles Winn
Philips, Jr.
March 11, 1969 – March 18, 2023
Charles Winn Philips Jr. was born on March 11, 1969, in Atlanta at Crawford Long Hospital. Winn was taken home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday March 18, 2023, in Brunswick, due to complications from a heart attack, and following a long battle with Rheumatoid Arthritis that he struggled with for 33 years. Winn grew up in Atlanta, where he was an active member of Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, and graduated from Pace Academy in 1987 where he was actively involved in theater and soccer.
Winn attended the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia, and was a proud member of the VMI class of 1991. He matriculated in August of 1987 as a "Rat" as all VMI freshmen are called. All military schools have a physically and mentally challenging first year for the freshman, and Rat year at VMI is no different. Winn successfully persevered with and encouraged the other members of his class (his "Brother Rats") as they went through the grueling first year together. Winn was an active member of the Glee Club, the Theater Club, The Cadet Newspaper staff, and played Rugby while at VMI, and studied Psychology and History. Being a member of his class at VMI was one of his proudest accomplishments. Due to the diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis, Winn finished his education at Auburn University, where he continued studying psychology, history and political science. He became a forever fan of all War Eagle sports.
Among his many talents God gave Winn, his tremendous gift of singing touched everyone he knew. This gift was evident at an early age, and he sang in the choir from elementary school through high school. He was a member of the Atlanta Boy Choir, Chapel Choir at Second Ponce de Leon Church and Revelation singing group. Winn was often selected to perform solos, praising God and showcasing his talent he was given to glorify God was one of his greatest accomplishments.
After college, Winn pursued singing professionally and was the lead singer of the Band Sticks of Stonewall from 1995 to 1999, where he recorded two CDs and toured primarily in the Southeast performing live shows. In the studio and on stage Winn was a natural, nicknamed "one take Winn" as he always hit his notes and made his part seem effortless.
Winn lived on St. Simons Island and in Brunswick in his later years and was an active member of the Friendship Baptist Church in Kingsland.
Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home/Golden Isles Cremation Center is honored to be assisting the family.
