Matthew "Matt" Jeffrey Doering, 56, passed away at his home in Brunswick under Hospice care on Tuesday, September 4th, 2018. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Michelle McDade Doering; a daughter, Miriam; a son, Ian; sister, Diane Black; brother, John J Doering, Jr.; sister, Barbara Black; brother, Louis Doering; and brother, Doug Doering. He was also "Uncle Matt" to several nieces and nephews.
Matt was born March 25, 1962 in Watsonville, California and was one of nine children born to the late John Joseph Doering, Sr. and Marian Elizabeth Doering. He treasured his childhood time growing up on his family's apple farm. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and after serving 3 years active duty as military police at Ft. DeRussy, Hawaii, he moved to St. Simons Island. In 1984 he began his career with the Glynn County Police Department. During his tenure there he earned his Associate of Science Degree in Criminal Justice at Brunswick Junior College, Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Armstrong State College, and Master of Public Administration Degree from Georgia Southern University. He was also a graduate of the F.B.I. National Academy, 179th Session. On December 9, 2003, he was appointed Chief of Police of the Glynn County Police Department and served until his retirement on October 1, 2017. His heart was that of a servant to the community and he continually sought to improve law enforcement operations, educate the public about the laws, and foster a good relationship between law enforcement and the community.
In his most recent position as a Glynn County School Resource Officer at Risley Middle School, he enjoyed his time working with children and gained a new appreciation for the teachers and administrative staff in our school system. He started and ended his days with a smile and set out to make others smile throughout the day.
He was an Assistant Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 204, a member of the Brunswick Exchange Club, Rotary Club, American Legion - Post 9, and an honorary member of the Ivy League Club. He was most recently appointed to the Board of Directors for the Golden Isles Youth Orchestra.
There will be a visitation at the Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5:00-7:00 PM. The funeral service will be held at the Northside Baptist Church at 1:00 PM on Saturday, September 8, 2018 with the Rev. Tim Brown officiating. Burial will follow at the Hazlehurst Memorial Cemetery.
