Obituary

David M. Owen "Dave", 87, passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at Southeast Georgia Regional in Brunswick, Georgia. He was born in Calhoun, Georgia on January 14, 1928. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah G. Owen (Brunswick); parents Rembert and Janette Owen (Calhoun), grandson, Christopher O. Miller (Brunswick); and two brothers, Reeve Owen (Signal Mountain, TN.) and Tom Owen (Skidaway Island, GA.) He is survived by his daughters, Virginia O. Miller (Jim) and Janette O. Wilson (Sherod) of Centerville, GA. Also Dave is survived by his granddaughter, Ashley M. Miller and great-grandson, Owen C. Miller, both of Brunswick; and his brother, Jim Owen of Clover, S.C. In addition to attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, Dave earned the bronze, silver and gold Palms through his years as a Boy Scout. He graduated from Calhoun High School in 1945. After completing a B.S. degree in Biology and Physical Education from North Georgia College, he graduated as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry. He later completed a master's degree in School Administration at the University of South Carolina. He continued with further studies in the doctoral program of school administration at the University of Georgia. After college studies, Dave taught and coached for 10 years in Cedartown, GA and in Columbia, S.C. He served in the US Army as a First Lieutenant in the 24th Infantry Division in Japan for two years. For seven years he worked as a teacher and assistant principal at Jane Macon Middle School in Brunswick, before being named principal of Glynn County Junior High School. He served as principal of GCJH for three years, until he was named principal of Glynn Academy in Brunswick. He served as principal of Glynn Academy for 13 years before retiring from education. Dave was a member of First Baptist Church of Brunswick, where he served as a deacon and as a former director of Adult 4 & 5 Sunday School Departments. He was a former partner in Gragg Cabinet Company. He was a member of the Georgia and South Carolina Educational Associations, the Georgia and South Carolina Coaches Associations, and the Glynn County Retired Teachers Association. He had formerly served as a member of the Cedartown Junior Chamber of Commerce. Dave, also, had served as a director and member for several local organizations: The Keep Brunswick Clean & Beautiful, Old Town Preservation Association, Glynn Teachers Federal Credit Union, and the Kiwanis Club. He volunteered at the Seaman's House. Visitation will be held at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm on Friday, September 25, 2015. A private family graveside service will be held at Brunswick Memorial Park Cemetery. The family requests donations are made to Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525, or Morningstar Children and Family Services, 100 Marsh Drive, Brunswick, GA.
