Obituary

Bill "Doc" Disque passed away on Thursday, February 18, 2021, at the age of 78. "H. E. L. P. - that's Bill Disque," said Preacher Felix Hays. Truer words were never spoken. Dr. William Eugene Disque was born on June 12th, 1942, in Alexandria, Indiana. His love of animals was firmly established there on his family's farm and would eventually grow into a lifelong career of veterinary work. Doc moved to St. Simons Island in 1974 with his wife Gayle Disque and then two-year-old daughter Ashley Disque Jenkins. A year later Doc and Gayle would welcome their son, Brad Disque. Doc was a proud graduate of Purdue University class of 1966 and forever a Boilermaker. He was presented with a Distinguished Alumnus Award by the University in 1995. He was a successful veterinarian, working at a clinic in Indianapolis for six years before opening Disque Animal Clinic in Brunswick, GA. Many will remember the clinic's sign, "Celebrating, protecting, and sharing the special love of animals, since 1966." Even after selling his practice in 2000, Doc continued to work and share his love of animals with the Department of Natural Resources, Animal Control, the Humane Society, and many clinics in the area, including his current role with Integrity Animal Clinic in Kingsland, Georgia. His love of animals extended beyond just household pets. He was always on call for friends and family and had stories to share of treating the occasional whale, manatee, sea turtle and even an owl. Doc was always available for home or ocean visits and would never turn away an injured or sick animal. Not content to heal just animals, Doc's impact extended to his commitment to Alcoholics Anonymous and the countless number of people he counseled there and at Doc's Place, a recovery center for substance abuse named after him. Doc is also known for his undeniable love of the game of golf, playing twice a week for the past 20 years. He called every friend and family member to share the news when he "shot his age" and again a few years later when he scored a hole in one at the Heritage Oaks Golf Club on Jan. 16, 2020. For his wife and family, Doc never failed to go all out with decorating the house for a holiday. Fourth of July was a grand event at Doc's house with decorated bikes, fireworks shows, and fun and games. He never failed to cover the house with lights for Christmas and for many years he happily donned his tuxedo to take his granddaughter out for a special New Year's Eve celebration. Whatever sport the grandkids were involved in, Doc was there not only to cheer them on at their games, but also to provide a practice court at home in St Simons. Pickleball, volleyball, baseball and basketball were always set for everyone to play with Doc. He spared no expense for his family and was over the top for his loved ones. We are all heartbroken by the loss of our best friend. One phrase from a close friend, Phillip Franks, rings especially true: "'Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart." Doc's impact on friends, family and the community was undeniable and will be a loss shared by many. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages guests to make contributions to Doc's Place at 1312 Newcastle St in Brunswick. Doc is survived by his wife Gayle Disque, daughter Ashley Jenkins, son Brad Disque, brother Dr. Don Disque, sister Sue DeLong and three grandchildren: Caroline Disque, Will Jenkins and Peyton Jenkins.
