Obituary

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Obie Clayton, Jr. (Dad, Grandad, June, or Doc) who departed this world peacefully at home on June 11, 2026. Born in the warm embrace of Meridian, Mississippi, Obie enriched the lives of countless individuals through his dedication to education, his unyielding kindness, and his vibrant spirit.

The son of the late Obie and Annie Clayton, Obie was predeceased by his beloved parents, who undoubtedly welcomed him into their arms once more. He leaves behind a cherished family, including his devoted wife and dearest friend of 34 years, Jamie Clayton, with whom he shared a beautiful marriage since December 28, 2013. His legacy lives on through his children, Michael Clayton (Alicia), Kristen Clayton, Justin Ross (Meike), and Brandon Baird (Mikeala), as well as his siblings, Vivian Gray (Yvonne), Earl Clayton, and Greg Clayton and a large extended family. Obie was a proud grandfather to five precious grandchildren (Tamia, Clay, Madisyn, Veronica (Ronnie), and Beau, who were the light of his life.

Obie's academic journey began at T.J. Harris High School and continued with distinction at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS where he earned his B.A. in Religion/Sociology. His thirst for knowledge led him to Emory University, where he completed his M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology. As a revered professor, Obie dedicated his career to enlightening minds at esteemed institutions including U. Mass Boston, the University of Nebraska in Omaha, Morehouse College, Atlanta University (now Clark Atlanta University), and the University of Georgia. He concluded his illustrious career as the Editor of the Journal Phylon at Clark Atlanta University, a publication first helmed by the legendary W.E.B. DuBois.

Obie was a man of deep faith, actively participating in church communities throughout his life. His spiritual journey took him from the 7th Street Church of Christ in Meridian, MS to Holy Cross in Decatur, GA, later to St. Martin in the Fields in Brookhaven, GA, and finally to Holy Nativity Episcopal Church on St. Simons Island, GA, where he remained a dedicated member.

Beyond academia, Obie was a man of diverse passions. He was an avid golfer, often found enjoying the serenity of different courses. A voracious reader, Obie delighted in sharing the joy of literature with those around him. His culinary skills were unmatched, particularly his renowned Bread Pudding and an array of chili recipes that warmed both hearts and stomachs.

Known for his quick wit and welcoming nature, Obie had a gift for making everyone feel valued. His kindness and generosity left a lasting mark on all who knew him, and his legacy of love and wisdom will endure in the hearts of many.

A service to honor and celebrate Obie's life will be held on June 27, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Nativity Episcopal Church, located at 615 Mallery Street, St. Simons Island, GA 31522. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Golden Isles Hospice for their compassionate care and to the Holy Nativity Episcopal Church community, friends, and neighbors for their unwavering support.

As we remember Dr. Obie Clayton, Jr., we hold onto the words of his family, “An imprint in our hearts forever.” May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his memory be a guiding light to all who were fortunate to know him.  In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
