Earline Barker Smith passed on December 29, 2013 at 5:30 a.m. at the Senior Care Center.
Annie Earline Barker Smith was born November 9, 1921, in rural Turner County, Georgia, to W.B. Barker, Sr. and his wife Annie. Earline was the third of four daughters and one son born to the Barkers. Always involved in the church, she and her three sisters would sing gospel together in the area around Turner County.
In the years of the Depression, preceding World War II, her family moved to Folkston, Georgia, as her father sought retail employment with his brother B.A. Barker (Bea), and it was in Folkston where Earline finished high school, eleventh grade at the time, with honors.
Her family again moved, this time to 9 Dixie Avenue, Brunswick, Georgia. Earline began work at Bennett's Drug Store at the corner of Newcastle and Gloucester Streets where she met her future spouse, Ollie Smith, and they were married on December 18, 1941, eleven days after Pearl Harbor, days after Ollie entered the United States Army. Because of a badly broken ankle, he remained in the United States during the war, training troops from Michigan to Texas to Kansas to Tennessee, and, when she could, Earline would drive to be with him, eventually settling daughter Marcia in a bassinet for their travels. Shortly after World War II, Ollie was stationed in Kobe, Japan, and Earline, Marcia, and son Bobby resided with the Barkers at 9 Dixie Avenue, Arco.
Upon his return, Earline and her family moved to Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, where they lived until they moved again with the Army to Baumholder, Germany. They returned to Ft. Jackson from Germany, and in 1961, Ollie retired from the Army and moved to Brunswick, Georgia; he died in September, 1964.
Earline worked for Sears, first on Glynn Avenue and later at Glynn Place Mall and retired in 1987. She enjoyed her work with Sears and made many friends among customers and fellow employees.
She was an active member of Calvary Baptist from June, 1961, until she began to reside in Senior Care in 2010. She loved to sing in the choir and served also in various other capacities. She enjoyed the outdoors, growing camellias, crepe myrtle, and other lovely shrubs that thrive in Brunswick. She enjoyed the bird life, reading, and most of all, she loved her family. She kindly nursed her son through his battle with multiple myeloma (d 2000), and she found great pleasure in her two grandsons, four great grandsons, and one great granddaughter. Matt Gibson lives in Chicago with wife Denise and has three sons - Ryan, Sam, and Benjamin, and Jon lives in Mooresville, North Carolina, with his wife Jessica, son Graham and daughter Campbell. Earline is also survived by her daughter Marcia and her husband of Springfield, Virginia. She was predeceased by her brother W.B. Barker, Jr. and his wife Mary of Brunswick; her sister Elon and her husband Stanton Dorminey of Coffee County, Georgia; her sister Vaness and her husband Wass Tanner also of Coffee County; and her youngest sister Nadine Prescott of Hoboken, Georgia, whose husband Glenn survives.
So many friends and many among the medical community have nurtured Earline during her final years. Immense gratitude to all of you who gently helped her to live alone until her eighty-ninth year and then continued to minister to her in Senior Care for the last three years of her life.
Family will receive friends Saturday, January 4, 2014, at 9:00 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with Funeral Services to follow at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in Brunswick Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made to the charity of your choice, or the Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund.
