Obituary

Eddie Lamar Roberts, 80, of Brunswick, passed away on November 23, 2024, at Hospice of the Golden Isles following a nearly two-year journey with Alzheimer's and dementia.

Born on September 24, 1944, in Dalton, Georgia, to Ed and Marcella Johnson Roberts, Eddie was the eldest of four siblings. His family moved from Dalton to Atlanta and eventually settled in Brunswick. Eddie graduated from Glynn Academy and Brunswick Junior College. He went on to serve as an Army sergeant during the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for his bravery and service.

After his military service, Eddie earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from The University of Georgia. In 1972, he married Sarah Nell Hughes Roberts, and together they built a life in Lilburn, Georgia, where they raised a son and a daughter. Eddie had a long and distinguished career as a chemist, engineer, and quality control consultant with AT&T in Atlanta, where he worked for nearly 30 years before retiring to Winder, Georgia.

In his final year, Eddie and Nell returned to Brunswick to be closer to family. He was lovingly cared for by his wife, sister and brother-in-law Ann and Wendell Harrell, his brother Steve and sister-in-law Linda, and his devoted nieces and nephews Alena and Wesley Baker and Alicia and Danny Benton.

Eddie was a man of deep faith and a lifelong Methodist, serving in leadership roles at several churches, including John Wesley United Methodist Church and Winder First United Methodist Church. He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and uncle, always putting his family first.

His interests were as varied as they were meaningful. He enjoyed playing guitar, reading science fiction, and refereeing soccer. A history enthusiast, Eddie cherished the time he spent exploring historic sites in the Brunswick area with his son, moments they both treasured deeply. Eddie was also a proud supporter of University of Georgia football and, later in life, became an avid fan of English Premier League soccer.

Eddie is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Nell; his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Tina Roberts; his sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Wendell Harrell; his brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Barbra Roberts, and Steve and Linda Roberts; eight nieces and nephews, Alicia, Amanda, Alena, Lauren, Suzanne, Whitfield, Justin, and Nathan; and his beloved grandchildren and step-granddaughters, Chance, Jakeb, Calista, and Eva.

Honoring Eddie's wishes, he was cremated shortly after his passing. A celebration of his life will be held on January 11, 2025, at Brunswick Memorial Park Cemetery and Funeral Home. The service will begin at 12pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association of America in Eddie's memory.
