Obituary

Edwin F. Cross left us on Tuesday, December 23rd. He died peacefully at home. He is survived by his wife Tanis Cross; brother, Homer Cross; sisters, Arleen Shuman and Jean Theiss; son, Gary (Na) Cross; granddaughter, Julie (Jason) Echols; 3 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by a brother, Robert Cross and a sister, Genevive Verrill. His parents were Arlie and Marie Cross. Ed grew up in Stow, Ohio. Attended Stow High School, graduated with honors. He won an award in the local Soap Box Derby. Ed joined the Navy during WWII. He finished his education at Kent State and the University of Michigan. He was honorably released from active duty in 1945. He served in the Navy Reserve until 1953 as a Lieutenant JG. With a degree in Mechanical Engineering he worked in Tennessee then Atlanta, GA at Stevens & Wilkinson, Thermal Engineering Co. and Marley Co. A man of numerous talents, he enjoyed hobbies of building and creating things. He made furniture, decorative and functional art. He was a young taxidermist, blacksmith, metalworker, gunsmith, collected and restored clocks and watches, loved fishing, hunting and the outdoors. He was a civil war historian and collector and member of the North South Skirmish Association. Involved in the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, he built the alter and stations of the cross. He served on church and hospital boards and was a past Kiwanis member. Retiring in Darien, GA he was a member of Friends of Sapelo, Historical Society and Archeology Club. He has artifacts on loan to the Old Jail Art Museum. Known for hand carving wooden bowls from timbers he salvaged from the Cathead River. His joy came from creating and giving to others. We will miss him. Memorial service will be held Saturday 1:00 PM at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home with Rev. William Kitchen officiating.
