Obituary

Ernest Stoddard Jones, 78, of St. Simons Island, GA, passed away on March 3, 2025, surrounded by family. He was born in Brunswick, GA on November 11, 1946, and was a devoted husband and loving father.

Ernie graduated from Glynn Academy in 1965. Shortly after, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam War.

Ernie's career spanned many years in the power industry, working for companies such as Georgia Power and Oglethorpe Power Corporation. He and his family later relocated to Gwinnett County, where Ernie dedicated much of his time to raising his five children. He was a constant presence at local parks where he coached football, baseball, and softball. He eventually retired from AT&T and returned to his beloved home of St. Simons Island in 2012.

Though Ernie often said he didn't want any pets, over the years he became a loving caretaker to many dogs and cats that his children brought home, endearing himself to all of them. He was often seen napping with a pet in his lap.

Ernie developed a love of genealogy and was proud of his Minorcan heritage. Although a quiet man, he would proudly tell anyone who would listen about his ancestry. He was instrumental in the formation of the Oak Grove Cemetery Society and faithfully volunteered in the beautification of the cemetery and the restoration of grave markers and monuments. He received a proclamation from the City of Brunswick and from the Daughters of the American Revolution for his work.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John A. Jones Sr. and Helen Rebecca Andreu; as well as his sister, Sara Wheeler.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marcie Chancey Jones; his brother John A. Jones, Jr.; his children, Matthew Jones (Leslie), Rebecca Malmquist (Jeffrey), Daniel Jones (Amber), Anthony Jones, and Lisa Schulze (John); grandchildren, Gabe Jones, Emma Jones, Kennedy Chastain, Claire Malmquist, Anna Jones, Conner Jones, Sarah Espino (Jonathan); Donavan Williams, Carly Williams, Tanner Edwards, Phoebe Jones, John "Jack" Schulze, Jr.; as well as two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Matthew Jones, Daniel Jones, Anthony Jones, Jeffrey Malmquist, Jack Schulze, Lawrence Jones, Jeff Nixon and Ronald Gregory will serve as pallbearers.

Anthony Cowart, Major Earle S Lott III USMC (Ret), John Schulze, J Steven Hinson as well as members of Brunswick's American Legion Post 9 will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home on Sunday, March 9 beginning at 3pm. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Williams Catholic Church on St. Simons Island on Monday, March 10, at 10:00 am, with interment in Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens immediately afterwards.
