Obituary

Evelyn Becky Mae Brown Messer, 88, our mama and granny was called home to be with her heavenly father on Friday, August 14, 2015 surrounded by her loved ones at her residence. She died from an extended illness due to complications from Vascular Dementia. She was a strong woman and a fighter until the end of her life on this earth. Granny Messer or Ma as she was called by her family and friends was born in Heflin, Alabama on April 3, 1927, the oldest of three children. She was preceded in death by husband, Erdele Messer of 43 years; her parents, William and Bessie Mae Brown; her brother, Russell Brown; and a son, Harold Brown. Evelyn and Erdele left Alabama in 1950. They lived in Ocilla and Douglas, Georgia before making Brunswick their permanent home in 1963. Together, they raised five children and played a role in helping their children raise their kids. Evelyn was a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. We were blessed by God to have him choose her to be our mama and granny. She leaves behind four daughters and one son. Dura Powell (Larry) from Saint George, Shirley Lane (Junior) from Jesup, Carolyn (Ricky) from Talbott, Tennessee, Billy Messer from Jesup, and Denise Messer from Brunswick. Also, she leaves behind her only sister, Nell Guthrie (Bobby) from Stockbridge, Georgia and several nephews and nieces. Grandchildren; Michael Underwood (Wendy) from Waycross, Melissa Hicks (Donnie) from Saint George, Lori Jackson (Gary) from Bozeman, Montana, Patricia Powell (James) from Hilliard, Florida, Greg Underwood (Mindy-his late wife) from Brunswick, Jeff Lane (Tracy) from Jesup, Rebecca Lane from Jesup, Michelle Powell from Jacksonville, Florida, Brenda Messer from Brunswick, Jennifer Messer from Brunswick, Harold Brown Jr. from Vancouver, Washington State, and Michael Parker (JoAnn) from Brunswick. Great-Grandchildren; Meghan Thomas (Aaron) from Brunswick, Fireman David Wilson from Darien currently serving in the Navy in Charleston, South Carolina, Petty Officer 3rd Class Steven Wilson from Darien currently serving in the Navy in Connecticut, Justin Jackson from Bozeman, Montana, Chris Hicks from Saint George, Cynthia Torres from Jesup, Lexi Underwood from Talbott, Tennessee, Taylor Hicks from Saint George, Hannah Smith from Hilliard, Florida, Jason Barrow from Jesup, Zoe Underwood from Talbott, Tennessee, Eriyanah Powell from Jacksonville, Florida, Sammy Brown from Stockbridge, Georgia, Jay Jackson (Yolitzen) and Steven Jackson from Indio (Palm Springs), California, and Brian Jackson from Greely, Colorado, Britany Minix (Wendell) and Dylan Underwood from Waycross, Christina and Andrew Parker from Brunswick. Her Great-Great Grandchildren; Keira Jackson from Indio (Palm Springs), California, Landon Minix from Waycross, Liam Jackson from Greely, Colorado. Mama was especially fond of her animals. She leaves behind her Grand Dog "Gidget", she cared for her until her illness would no longer allow her to do so. She may have been Denise's baby dog but she always insisted it was her baby too. Evelyn was a devoted homemaker her entire life. She loved her family and was always there whenever someone needed her to help them. She was a Christian woman and loved God with all her heart. She loved reading her Bible and Sunday School Book. She was a member of the Church of God for over 50 years. Listening to the old gospel songs always made her smile. No matter what obstacle she faced in life, mama always had that smile on her face we came to love and cherish with each day we had with her. She was a blessing to all that knew and loved her. She was the best friend to all of her children. During her lifetime she loved cooking, gardening, crocheting, sewing, and going to the beach. She loved being surrounded by pictures of her family and displayed them throughout her home. She passed the gift of loving family down to us and made sure family was important no matter what disagreements we had. Mama loved the history of our country and was proud to be called an American. She loved living in this wonderful country where so many people of her generation fought and died, so, we could have our freedom today. She also enjoyed traveling. Some of her favorite places to visit were Washington, D.C., Arlington National Cemetery, Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, the Great Smokey Mountains, different beaches on the east coast, and family out of town. She will truly be missed by her family because no one will or could take the place of the woman we called mama or granny. We know she is in heaven with, our daddy, Erdele, other family members and friends. We will always think of her when we see a sparkling star in the sky just as we think of daddy. We say good-bye for now. Always remember: You Were Loved and Cherished-We will forever love and miss you mama. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Monday, August 17, 2015 at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, August 18, 2015 in the Chapel of Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home with Rev. Earl Lamey and Rev. Larry Powell officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Active Pallbearers will be her son, Billy Messer, and her grandsons, Michael Underwood, Greg Underwood, and Jeff Lane. The family would like to thank Mallory Quinette and Melissa Brown, her nurses, as well as Shawna Hendrix, her CNA, for taking good care of our mama since December 2014. We appreciate and love the kindness that Hospice of the Golden Isles gave to our mama and to us. Hospice went out of their way to make our mama comfortable in her final days. They were angels sent by God to help our family in our time of need. Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home is serving the family of Evelyn Becky Mae Brown Messer.
