Obituary

Gail Goldsmith Rose, 62, born in Atlanta, Georgia, died on June 28th nearly six years following her diagnosis of parotid (salivary) gland cancer. A resident of St. Simons Island since 1984, Gail came to the area to pursue a career as a Physician's Assistant (P.A.). During her long medical tenure, she served thousands of patients in internal medicine, family medicine, urgent care and most recently in dermatology with Georgia Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center. Gail earned her Bachelor's degree in nursing from Florida State University and a Bachelor of Medical Science degree from Emory University. She began her career as a Registered Nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta. She was well respected by colleagues, loved by her patients and valued throughout the community for the level of excellence she brought to her profession. In 1993, she received the Outstanding Preceptor Award from P.A. students at Emory's School of Medicine, recognized as the non-physician teacher/mentor who had the biggest impact on their education. Even more than this, Gail was a wonderful sister, mother, companion and friend. Her diverse hobbies included travel, boxing at Brunswick Boxing and MMA, scuba diving, reading and movies. She most recently traveled to Iceland and South Africa. A 1999 honoree of the Brunswick YWCA's Tribute to Women Leaders, Gail served on the organization's board, including a term as president. In addition, she took an active role with the Y's swim team, where her late son Zachary (Zach) excelled. The ultimate "Swim Mom," Gail was especially proud of Zach's selection to attend the U.S. National Junior Team training camp in Colorado Springs in 2006, in advance of his international competition. Gail is predeceased by her parents, Flora and Richard Goldsmith; her son, Zach; and Zach's father, Jerry Rose. She is survived by her sister, Emily (Martin) Glickstein; brother, Richard (Debbie) Goldsmith; cousin, Ken Minyon; mother-in-law, Barbara Rose; sister-in-law, Mary Foltz; brother-in-law, Kevin (Karen) Rose; sweetheart and partner, Dr. Irwin Berman; and five nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the staffs of FirstLight Home Care and Hospice of the Golden Isles for their loving attention, care and support during Gail's illness. A funeral service will be held beginning at 10:30 a.m. Monday July 2nd at Temple Beth Tefilloh, 1326 Egmont Street in Brunswick, Rabbi Rachael Bregman and Pastor Wright Culpepper co-officiating. Interment immediately follows at Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens, 5775 Frederica Road, St. Simons Island. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to Safe Harbor Children's Center/Zach's Place, P.O. Box 1313, Brunswick 31521; Temple Beth Tefilloh, P.O. Box 602, Brunswick 31521; or
