Gasper "Perry" DeFino, 79, of Brunswick died Tuesday at the local hospital. A native of Brooklyn, New York, he moved to Brunswick in 1975. Perry retired from the U.S. Navy after 23 years of service as a Submarine Torpedo Chief. He served in both Korea and Viet Nam. Perry worked with U.S. Customs as a Patrol Officer on the West Coast, and was employed as a Firearms Instructor, and after 9/11 worked with Transportation Security at FLETC. He was a member of the National Rifle Assoc., Fleet Reserve Assoc., and SubVets Inc. at King Bay, Georgia Police Marksmanship League and the Navy Shooters Assoc. While in the Navy Perry earned 2 distinguished shooter medals and while in Customs he earned 3 more distinguished shooter metals. Perry is survived by his wife, Margaret A. DeFino of Brunswick; 2 sons, Michael DeFino and John DeFino both of San Diego, CA; an adopted son, James Wade (Patricia) of Waynesville GA.; a daughter, Cathy DeFino of San Diego; a sister, Rosetta Kelley (Chet) of Dunnellon, FL. 3 grandchildren, Michael, Faith and Danny DeFino. Memorial Services will be held Monday at 10AM in the Chapel of Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home. Rev. Bert Cramer officiating. Full Military Honors will be held. His remains will be buried at sea at a later date by the U.S. Navy in Kings Bay. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be sent to the Glynn County Humane Society or Disable American Veterans.
