Obituary

George Carter Baird, 92, of Marietta, Georgia, formerly of Saint Simons Island, passed from this life on August 22, 2024, at his home in Acworth, Georgia. Carter was born on January 14, 1932, in Bolivar, Tennessee. His parents were Harold and Maxine Baird. He graduated from Central High School in Bolivar in 1950. He attended Memphis State College prior to enlisting in the Air Force at the beginning of the Korean War. During his twenty-year career, he served overseas tours in Korea, Japan, Libya, Vietnam, Thailand, and Germany. In 1955, he was selected to attend the Air Force Officer Candidate School and was subsequently commissioned a lieutenant. He retired in 1970 in the rank of major. He entered the FBI as a trainee and was commissioned a Special Agent, serving in the Cincinnati and Baltimore Divisions. He was then selected for special duty with the U.S. House of Representatives, Committee on Appropriations, Surveys and Investigations Staff. He retired from this position in 1994 as the Deputy Director. Carter held an undergraduate degree in Military Science from Omaha University and a master's degree in criminal justice from Coppin State University.

Carter was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Carmen, his second wife, Mary Lynn Davin Baird, and his third wife, Nell Abercrombie Baird.

He is survived by sons George Michael Baird of Thailand, Robert Mark Baird of Pagosa Springs, CO, Dr. John Kevin Baird of Jakarta Indonesia and Brett Fitzgerald Baird of Acworth, Georgia. Nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Stepsons Jeff and Tom Keefe and stepdaughters Kim and Shannon Davis. Survived also by former wife, Barbara Anderson of Cumming, Georgia.

Carter will be buried in a graveside service with full military honors at Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens, St. Simons. Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home Thursday August 29th at 10am.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Hospice of the Golden Isles, Brunswick, GA.
