Obituary

George Marshall "Marty" Gensmer, Jr., 84, passed away peacefully Monday, October 27, 2025, under the care of Hospice of the Golden Isles.

Born in Alexandria, Virginia, on July 16, 1941, Marty was the only son of George Marshall "Hardy" and Margaret Irene Hicks Gensmer. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served three tours of duty in Vietnam aboard the USS Oriskany Aircraft Carrier. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Marty devoted the next 30 years to serving his hometown community as a paramedic and firefighter with the City of Alexandria. Later, he joined his sister on St. Simons Island and worked as a Safety Officer at FLETC in Brunswick for a number of years before finally retiring for good.

Marty will be fondly remembered for his larger-than-life presence, great sense of humor, and boundless love of animals.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew, Scott Marshall Russell.

He is survived by his daughters, Callie Ann Gensmer Milam and husband, Michael, of Winchester, VA, and Cole Davis Gensmer Birdsey, and husband, Sanford, of Atlanta, GA; his son, Travis Marshall Gensmer of St. Simons Island, GA; his sister, Ann Davis Gensmer Russell of St. Simons Island; his nine grandchildren, Ashlie Laing and husband, Josh, Chelsie Wheeler and husband, Diarmuid, W. Clay Hickerson, Caroline, Mary Sanford, and Lawson Birdsey, Trent and Logan Mitts, and Helena Gensmer; and seven great-grandchildren.

Marty will be laid to rest in a family plot in Union Cemetery, in Alexandria, Virginia, at a later date.
