Obituary

Gerald B West Gerald B. West, 78, longtime resident of St. Simons Island, GA, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, January 19 2013, after suffering from Alzheimer's disease for several years. Jerry was born December 13, 1934, in Cleveland, Ohio, son of Oscar R. West and Helen (Fraley) West. He was raised in Valley City, Ohio, where he graduated from Liverpool High School in 1952. Jerry was a proud Buckeye, graduating from Ohio State University in 1957, where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. After college, in 1958, Jerry enlisted in the U. S. Army, and was stationed in Arkansas. Jerry married his college sweetheart, Jean C. Bowen in 1959, and they settled in Cleveland, Ohio. Jerry's love of sales and marketing led him to many companies throughout his long and successful career. He began as a sales representative for G. L. Williams & Co., based in Cleveland and Youngstown, OH, from 1958-62. From there he moved on to The Stanley Works in Pittsburgh, (1963-76),where he attained the position Nat'l Accounts Mgr, and General Marketing Mgr., and eventually moved his family to Connecticut. In 1976,Jerry became the founding partner and President of The Packaging Group, in Simsbury, CT, from 1977-83, Jerry changed directions, and became Northeast District Sales Manager for Georgetown Steel Corp., a company based in South Carolina. In 1983, Jerry became President, Composite Materials Division, at Lyndall Inc., in Manchester, CT, a position he held until 1988. In 1989, Jerry migrated south to St. Simon's Island, GA, with Insteel Construction Systems, Inc., where he served as Vice President and General Manager until 1999, when he became President of ICS 3-D Panel Works, Inc., a position he held until his retirement in 2004. In 1990, Jerry was honored to be named Executive of the Year by the Golden Isles Chapter of the Int'l Professional Secretaries Assoc. Jerry was also involved in many local civic activities, and served as a member of the Glynn County, GA Airport Commission in the late 1990's. In addition, he and his wife Jean were founding members of the ST. Simons Island Shorebirds. Jerry learned to fish at age 5, and enjoyed this favorite pastime throughout his entire life. Golf, however, was Jerry's true passion. He learned to golf at age 12, and became and avid and accomplished golfer for the remainder of his life. He was proud to have attended the Masters tournament twice, and he was able to fulfill his lifelong dream of playing golf in Ireland in 1995. Jerry leaves behind his 3 children, Jenny West Kearns and her husband Marty, of Glastonbury, CT; Joel West of St. Simons Island, GA; Julie West, also of St. Simons Island, GA; and was pre-deceased by Jean, his wife of 51 years. In addition, Jerry leaves behind his 6 grandchildren; Devon, Patrick, Courtney and Carrie Kearns, and Dylan and Connor West. Finally, Jerry leaves behind his siblings; brother Donald West, and sisters Patricia Westland, Helen Lawer, Elizabeth Mason and Phyllis Shaw, along with his beloved sister-in-law Jo B. Albright, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Jerry's family will receive friends Saturday, (January 26, 2013), from 10-11 a.m. at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home, 4407 U. S.
