Gloria Fowler Johnson, a longtime resident of Saint Simons Island, Georgia, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026, surrounded by family.

Born in Barcelona, Spain, she made the journey to the United States as a young military wife of George Fowler. Together, they built a life in Phenix City, AL, and had four daughters.

Gloria eventually settled on the Georgia coast where she met and married Roy Johnson. On the island, a place that truly called to her, she was of part of the original 5th Street Sunset Watchers, becoming a cherished part of the St. Simons Island community. Gloria was known for her strong work ethic, beautiful smile, vibrant personality, charm, and love for life. She loved to dance; a passion rooted in her Spanish heritage and the traditions she carried with her from Barcelona. Music and dancing brought her great happiness, and she never missed an opportunity to step onto the dance floor and share that joy with others. She also enjoyed sharing a good glass of wine with family and friends, moments filled with stories, laughter, and celebration.

Her family takes comfort in knowing that her life was one of courage, love, and unwavering dedication to those she held dear.

Gloria was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Johnson, and daughter, Gloria Fowler.

She is survived by her daughters, Monse Burkett, Sudie Johnston, and Wilma McVay (Paul), as well as her grandchildren, Stacey Smith, Shelley Hwang, Shannon Bartels, Jermey McVay, Angel Burkett, and Sammy Burkett; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service celebrating Gloria’s life will begin at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home, with committal to follow in Brunswick Memorial Park. We encourage those in attendance to share a memory during the service. In honor of Gloria, her closest family members will be wearing red, her favorite color.
