Henry B. (Hank) Brooks of Brunswick went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 16, 2014, under the loving care of Hospice of the Golden Isles.
He was born on Dec 9, 1930, in Kino, Virginia to the late Lewis and Netta Brooks and was preceded in death by a sister Inell Becker and two brothers, Floyd Brooks and Henley Brooks who died from wounds received in the Belgian Bulge World War II.
Hank made his home in Brunswick for the past 53 years. Chief Brooks proudly served 20 years in the US Navy with duties in Yokosuka, Japan and aboard many Naval ships. He retired from the Navy while assigned to the USS Cascade AD16 in Newport, RI. He was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and United Nations Service Medal, and the recipient of five Good Conduct awards. Following his Navy career, he was employed with the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center as a Training Technician, scheduling the courses for the participating agencies and retired after 21 years of service.
In his earlier church affiliation he served on the Board of Deacons, Sunday School teacher for various age groups, and children's ministries. He did volunteer work for 24 years at the local nursing homes visiting and encouraging the patients and holding church services for them. He was a participant in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and a member of the Golden Isles Church of God. He enjoyed studying the Bible, working in his yard, and watching the Braves.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Virginia Brooks; two daughters Linda and son-in-law Barry Hayes, Judy and son-in-law Mike Haulman; grandchildren, Adam (Stephanie) Hayes, Rachel (Paul) Flantos, Jackie Haulman, and Amber (Justin) Geiger; two great-grandchildren Clara Geiger and Avery Hayes; Sisters, Mary Wright of Pulaski, VA, and Margaret Brooks of Callao, VA; three Brothers, Dr. George (Suzanne) Brooks, Newport News, VA, Alvin (Olive) Brooks, Canton, Ohio, and Irvin (Florence) Brooks, Peralta, NM.
The Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home will be serving the family where they will receive friends on Friday, July 18 at 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 19 at 10:00 a.m. at the Golden Isles Church of God with the Rev. Ray Dawson officiating. Interment will follow at Brunswick Memorial Park with Bruce Miller, Jack Williams, Keith Ross, Wayne Hutcheson, Elder James Howard, and Carlton Fitzpatrick serving as Pallbearers.
Honorary Pallbearers are the Trailblazer Sunday School Class, Joy Ministries and Choir of the Golden Isles Church of God, the Primetimers, and the caring staff of Hospice of the Golden Isles.
