Henry 'Hank' Sowa , 79, of Brunswick, GA., passed away suddenly on August 26, 2013.Hank was born in Nanticoke, PA to Andrew Sowa and Sophia Mahjer Sowa.
Hank grew up in Nanticoke, PA. He graduated from Nanticoke High School and attended Pennsylvania State University. He enrolled in Flint River Power Squadron. He began his career in the United States Air Force at Tydall Air Force Base, followed by US Air Force Reserves at Willow Grove Naval/Air. During his career as an Air Force Reservist, he began his career in the Civil Service in electronics at the Naval Air Development Center in Warminster, PA. In order to move south, he took a position at the Philadelphia Supply Depot in Philadelphia, PA which in turn created a move to the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, GA. After six years the wanderlust came about and he took a position in Frankfurt, Germany for three years and returned to the Marine Corps Logistics Base where he retired in 1991.
Hank's interests were attending and volunteering at Nativity of Our Lady, prayer, volunteering at the Knights of Columbus, his grandpuppies Rascal and Livia, gardening, and was an avid amateur radio enthusiast.
Hank is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Bonnie Prestine Copeland Sowa whom he met at Tyndall Air Force Base and devoted daughter, Sonia Marie Sowa of Brunswick. He was the youngest of nine children. He was predeceased by siblings; Joseph Sowa, Marie Koszyk, Helen Shugdinis, Dorothy Brzdeski, John Sowa, Edward Sowa, and Lillian Slusser. He has one surviving sibling, Stephanie Kochuba of Wilkes-Barre, PA. He is survived by many caring nieces and nephews in Georgia and Pennsylvania.
The viewing and Rosary will be held at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 from 6 pm to 8 pm. The Rosary will begin at 7 pm.
The mass will be held on August 29, 2013, 11:00a.m.at Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church in Darien with Father Bob Showers presiding. The pall bearers will be Leo Kennedy, Rick O'Connor, Carlos Chacon, John Klawitter, Michael Powell, and Bob Katoski.
Honorary pall bearers will be the Knights of Columbus Council 3607 and American Legion Post 9.
Graveside services will be conducted on Friday, August 30, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Floral Memorial Gardens, Albany, GA. US Air Force color guard and St. Theresa's Catholic Church Knights of Columbus, Albany will also be in attendance.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Knights of Columbus Scholarship Fund Council 3607 or the Brunswick Humane Society.
