Jack Sisloff Parker, 96, a long-time resident of St. Simons, died Sunday, Sept. 20 at his home. Mr. Parker, a World War II veteran, was born July 31, 1919 in Belzoni, Mississippi, and grew up in Sumrall, MS. He worked in a CCC Camp prior to winning the big lottery, and was inducted into the Army, where he served as combat navigator/bombardier on a B-25 Mitchell medium bomber in the China-Burma-India Theater. He flew 74 missions, logging 302 hours and was credited with 14 leads. Jack was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal, each with Oak Leaf Clusters, for his Army Air Corps service. He regularly attended his WWII 12th Bomb Group, 83rd Squadron reunions and was an active member and past commander of Guale Post 166 of the American Legion. After the War, he earned a chemical engineering degree from the University of Mississippi, and then worked in New Orleans where he met and married his wife, Nigel. In 1953 he moved to East Point and worked for Thomas Paint in Atlanta, and in 1965 moved to St. Simons Island, to work for Dixie O'Brien Paint Company. He became a member of St. Simons Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and elder. He was a graduate of UGA Co-op Extension's Master Gardener program, an accomplished cultivator of roses and award-winning member of the Golden Isles Rose Society. He brightened many peoples' day with gifts of his roses for years. Mr. Parker was preceded in death last November by his wife of 63 years, Nigel, and by his son Alan in April 2014. He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Kerr (Horace) of Jackson, MS, sister-in-law Arden Dalia (Frank) of New Orleans, son Jack Jr. (Melody) of St. Augustine, son Brian of Jacksonville, daughter-in-law Aida Khalaf-Parker of New York City, son Lindsey (Lori) of Brunswick, and son Bart (Beth) of Lilburn, ten grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Simons Presbyterian Church. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 AM Monday, Oct. 12, at St. Simons Presbyterian Church with a reception following.
