Lanier
September 28, 1942 – January 1, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of James D. "Jim" Lanier of Brunswick, Georgia, on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, at his residence. Jim was born to the late Bernard Lanier and Marie McCorkle Lanier.
Jim Lanier joined the Airforce, became a sergeant, and was a proud Vietnam veteran. He started his career in law enforcement in 1970 as a Georgia State Trooper with the Georgia State Patrol in Brunswick. Jim was promoted to Corporal in Hinesville and later transferred back to Brunswick Georgia State Patrol Post.
In 1976, Jim was hired by the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center as an instructor and was later promoted to the Chief of Drivers Training Division. Later, he transferred to Chief of the Firearms Division. He retired after thirty years of Federal service at FLETC. He was then hired as a Federal Court Security Officer in the Southern District of Georgia until he retired. Jim was a true gentleman, a great leader, and he loved to serve.
Jim is survived by his wife, Louise Cheshire-Lanier; sons, Walt Lanier (Shawn, who was like a daughter) and Jimmy Cheshire (Heather); grandchildren, Jarred Lanier, Devin Lanier, Brittany Lanier, Ava Cheshire, and Jameson Cheshire; one great granddaughter, Emilia Lanier; sisters, JoNelle Morales (Bob), Linda L Dunlap (Don); a brother, B. Thomas "Tommy" Lanier; eight nieces and nephews; seven grand nieces and nephews; as well as six great-grand nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 10:00, followed by a memorial service at 11. Interment will occur at Chapel Park Cemetery at a later date. The Reverend Charles Smith will be officiating.
