Obituary

James A. Miller (Jim), 72, passed away on January 7, 2023, at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick, Georgia. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri on January 3, 1951 to Fred and Mary Miller. He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher Owen Miller and his parents, Fred and Mary Miller of Decatur, Georgia.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Owen Miller (Ginger), his daughter, Ashley M. Miller (Michael, Trystn, and Ashtyn) of Brunswick, his grandson, Owen Christopher Miller of Brunswick and his sister-in-law, Janette Owen of Centerville, Georgia. He is also survived by his sister, Pat Monstrud, two nieces Debi Evans and Cindi Monsam along with their families.

Jim grew up in Decatur, Georgia where he was active in the Peachcrest Baptist Church. After marrying Ginger, he moved his membership to First Baptist Church of Brunswick. He earned his Eagle Scout rank while participating as a Boy Scout. Jim graduated from Avondale High School. After completing his B.S. and Master's degrees at Georgia College, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha, he went on to complete his Education Specialist degree at Georgia Southern College.

His first year in education was in Milledgeville, Georgia as a Program Evaluator for the Learning Center. He spent several years working in the family business, Gragg Cabinet Company, before returning to education. He taught for 13 years at Jane Macon Middle School, before moving to Brunswick High School as assistant principal. His last year before retirement was spent in Commerce, Georgia as an assistant principal at East Jackson Middle School. Working with and supporting students was his calling. He remained in contact with many of his former students throughout their lives after they left high school. He enjoyed following their jobs, travels, and families right up until his death.

Jim was a long time supporter of the Florida State Seminoles, holding season passes to their games for several years. Jim and Ginger enjoyed working on their family home in Old Town Brunswick and spending time with family and their many pets. He served as a CASA volunteer for several years as well as a Citizens Patrol officer in the community. He enjoyed genealogy research and made two trips to Croatia to meet members from the Croatian side of his family and visit family homesites.

The family will honor Jim in a private service before burial at Brunswick Memorial Park. Later celebrations of his life will be held with family gatherings. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of the Golden Isles or the Jekyll Island Baptist Chapel would be appreciated.
