John B. Holmes, 51, passed away at his residence Tuesday. He was a life-long resident of Brunswick. He was a 1978 graduate of Glynn Academy. John was employed by the Sea Island Company for 32 years and was a member of the Quarter Century Club. He worked in the Engineering Department. He was an avid sports fan and golfer. He was often referred to as "Mr. ESPN". He loved to share sports stories with all. He was especially fond of any golf tournament, NASCAR racing, the Jacksonville Jaguars and his favorite, the Georgia Bulldogs. His hobby was antiquing. His collections included coins, coke memorabilia, NASCAR collectables and many old bottles.
He attended Fellowship Methodist Church.
Survivors include his parents; Steve and Sue Holmes of Brunswick, brothers; David Holmes of Tybee Island and Thomas Holmes of Brunswick, sisters; Doris (Rick) Jones, Beth (Andy) Cain both of Brunswick. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews; Chris Jones, Shanna (Robert) Giles, Stephen Cain and Sarah Cain, great Niece, Candice Cain; great Nephew, Drew Giles; many aunts, uncles and cousins.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, September 1, 2012 at College Place United Methodist Church. The service will be officiated by Rev. Michael Batten, assisted by Rev. Rob Grotheer. The family will host a reception immediately following the service in the Christian Life Center at College Place.
Honorary pall bearers will be current employees and retirees of the Sea Island Company, Pete Evenson and Eric Engler.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3011 Hampton Avenue Suite 361 Brunswick, GA 31520.
