Obituary

Johnny Leroy Alberson, 72, of Brunswick, died Tuesday, February 14 at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick, GA. Born July 28, 1939, in Turner County, Georgia to the late Virgil Lloyd and Gladys Wheeler Alberson, Johnny was a graduate of Turner County High School. He received a bachelor of science degree in agriculture engineering from the University of Georgia. Upon graduation from college he worked with Ralston Purina Feed Company in Guntersville, AL where he met and married his wife, the former Elaine Brooks. In 1971 he and Elaine moved to Butler, AL where they owned and operated the Western Auto Store. In 1984 Alberson became Transportation Director for the Choctaw Co. (Alabama) School System. He retired from this position in 2004. Johnny served for 22 years as President of the Choctaw County Association of Volunteer Fire Departments, and was elected to three consecutive terms as President of the Alabama Association of Volunteer Firefighters. He served for 34 years as Butler's Assistant Fire Chief, until 2009 when he and his wife moved to Brunswick to be closer to their two sons. Along with being a Volunteer Fireman, Johnny was a Little League Baseball Coach, member of the Choctaw County (AL) Board of Education, and member and chairman of the Board of Directors of the Choctaw County E-911 Communications District. He was elected Butler Volunteer Fire Department Fireman of the Year in 1975 and 1978. He also received the 1989 Governor's Volunteer Award for Public Safety. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Alberson Ivy. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Elaine Brooks Alberson of Brunswick; two sons, John Garrow Alberson and wife Wendy of St. Simons Island, and William Lloyd Alberson and wife Jenny of Brunswick; two brothers, Willard Alberson of Ashburn, GA, and Dale Alberson of Albany, GA.; and five grandchildren; Alexis Kay Alberson, Whitley Brooks Alberson, Annajane Katherine Alberson, John Grey "Jack" Alberson, Elijah Thomas Dugan. Visitation and Services Family will receive friends, Thursday, February 16, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Friday, February 17, 2012 at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church with Dr. Neal Cordele officiating. Interment will follow in Brunswick Memorial Park Cemetery. Serving as pall-bearers will be, Josh White, Monty Henderson, Robert Elzy, Jack Pierce, Lawton Teston and Jeff Dodgen. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Butler, Alabama where the Albersons lived for 38 years before moving to Brunswick
