One more of "The Greatest Generation," to whom we owe so much, has departed.
Joseph H. Legette, born May 17, 1923, entered his rest on Feb. 27, 2012. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1971 on the USS Preble, Mahan, Siboney, Consolation, Coronado, Bryce Canyon, Orca, Pine Island and Chenango. He received service medals for the following campaigns: European African Middle Eastern, Asiatic Pacific, American, National Defense, Korean Service, China, World War II Freedom Medal, Occupation Service and United Nations Defense Medal. After retiring from the Navy, he was employed at Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick and he spent much of his time fishing with friends in the beautiful waters surrounding the Brunswick area.
He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas Legette and Edith Driggers Legette; his beloved wife, Lottie Johnson Legette of Brunswick; and four sisters, Ruby Barfield of Florence, S.C., Violet Ryals of Mount Pleasant, S.C., Barbara Zweigle of Charleston, S.C., and Jetalean Smoke.
Left behind to miss him are his loving wife, Mattie Legette; a daughter, Rudeane Ivester of Greer, S.C.; grandchildren, Molly Alison Ivester, Daniel Island, S.C., and William-Joseph Zachary Ivester of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; brothers, Marion Legette of Charleston Heights, S.C., and William Legette of Folkston; sisters, Vivian Hunt of Bamberg, S.C., Christine Kelly of Goose Creek, S.C., Betty Waltrip of McDonough and Edith Griffin of Lake Butler, Fla.; sister-in-law, Glennie Gettinger of Brunswick; and many loving nieces and nephews; step-children and grandchildren, James Dean III (Ashleigh, Amanda and Nicholas), Catherine Goeden (Tiffany, Scott and Kameron), William Early (Brian and Amber), and Edward Early (Jake, Misty and Crystal); great-grandchildren, Hannah, Myah, Kailey, Riley, Marley and Ryland.
The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2012, at Brunswick Memorial Park, 4407 U.S. 17, Brunswick.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
