Obituary

Joseph Anthony Rodgers Olarte (Jose'), passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 1, 2014. He was born June 8, 1942, in Barranquilla, Colombia, South America. He played soccer as a teen in the Pan American games with Pele and moved to the U.S. when he was 18 and became a proud American citizen. He danced Colombian folk dances at the World's Fair in New York and at Radio City Music Hall. Joseph lived in Hackensack, New Jersey, where he married Patricia and had three children. He married Carol in 1984 and they relocated to Georgia; which led to thirty wonderful years of marriage with a loving family of six children and thirteen grandchildren. Joseph worked at Sears and Roebuck for 22 years and then became a Ship Chandler, retiring in 2004. He proudly served as a U.S. Marine. He is preceded in death by his father, Daniel Rodgers; his mother, Teresa Olarte Rodgers; and a sister, Gloria Rodgers. He is survived by his loving wife Carol; sisters, Judith Jones, Luz Rodgers, and Nidia Carazo; his brother, Giovanni Rodgers; and his Tia Tonia. He leaves a legacy of love in his children and grandchildren, Kirk and Wendi Rodgers (Lauren, Joshua, and Daniel), Arlene and Michael Non (Elizabeth, Natalie, and Matthew), Amy Norton (Zachery and Luke), Joann and Robert Bolton, Alicia Ehlers and Theodora Thompson, Erin and Brandon Davis (Madeline, Desarae, Kyle, Dawson, and Noah). He is also survived by his treasured nieces and nephews, as well as his loving mother-in-law, Reno Nelson. Memorial Services will be held 3:00 pm Friday, September 5, 2014 at St. James Lutheran Church with Pastor Laurie Williams officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service at the church. Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Johnson, Dr. Jack Amie, Dr. Shenon Badre, Dr. Mitchell Jones, Dr. Matt Certain, Dr. Enrique Martinez, Dr. Ahmed Elsharkawi, and Angelia, Janice and Mandy from the Golden Isles Dialysis Clinic.
