Katherine Louise Harvey George went home to her heavenly father on August 17, 2017 just two weeks before her 94th birthday. She was born in Macon, GA on September 1, 1923 to Florence Hardie and George Rogers Harvey. Katherine graduated from Lanier High and married her high school sweetheart, Harold Lloyd George. They were married for 53 wonderful years until his death in 1994. She was a devoted wife and mother. In her early years, she was employed at W.D. Griffith & Sons Insurance Company and later by General Electric from which she retired. Both Katherine and Lloyd were very active in their church, first at Cherokee Heights Methodist and later became charter members of Riverside Methodist Church. Katherine served on the alter guild for many years and served on the outreach ministry, visiting those unable to attend church. She often accompanied the ministers to service communion to this group. Katherine delighted in preparing Easter Baskets and other holiday gifts for her "shut-ins" as well as entire nursing homes. One cannot think of Katherine without thinking of her beloved St. Simons Island. She and Lloyd owned a condo at Shipwatch where she spent countless hours on the beach. For the past ten years, this had become her permanent home. Katherine had many interests such as golf, bridge, and canasta. She served as a volunteer at the Macon Hospital and was a longtime member of Riverside Golf Country Association. Katherine is survived by her daughters, Kaye George Wansley of Macon and Peggy George Merrill (Gordy) of St. Simons Island; three grandsons, Jay Wansley (Stephanie) of Decatur, Ramsey Merrill (Dalee) and Blake Merrill (Keeli) both of St. Simons Island; great grandchildren, Brynn Sophia Wansley, Mallory Nicole Merrill, Ava Grace Dunham, and Winslett Dalee Merrill; and her beloved dog, Sweetpea. The family would like to give a special thanks to Katherine's care givers, Phyllis Wilson, Peggy Henderson, and Ashley Winkler. These three angels have become a part of Katherine's family. Their love and care of Katherine was exceptional and will always be remembered and appreciated. Also a special thank you is extended to loving, caring staff of Hospice of the Golden Isles. A private graveside service will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Macon, GA on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. Details for a memorial service to be held in St. Simons Island will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to St. Simons United Methodist Church, Riverside United Methodist Church, Hospice of the Golden Isles or the Humane Society of Coastal Georgia.
