Obituary

Kenneth DeVore Kribbs, Sr. passed away, Monday, July 30, 2012 at home under Heartland Hospice, with his wife by his bedside. He was born May 23, 1927 in Lakeland, Florida to parents Hazel Gebhart and James Clarence Kribbs. He attended Dixieland Grammar School in Lakeland, Florida and Duncan Fletcher Jr. High and Julia Landon High in Jacksonville, Florida, and graduated from Orlando Sr. High. He attended Orlando Jr. College, University of Tennessee in Knoxville and graduated from Maryville College in Maryville, TN. He was a devout Christian having been christened at Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Lakeland, Florida and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Brunswick, at the time of his death. Ken started in broadcasting as a staff announcer in Orlando in 1942. He was then a sportswriter for the Maryville-Alcoa Daily Times. After that he worked for WGAP in Maryville, TN as a staff announcer, news editor, sportscaster, commercial sales and was a 4-time Associated Press class newsman of the year. Later he worked as a sportscaster and commercial manager for WEAG in Alcoa, TN. WLBB-WBTR in Carrollton, GA and WMOG in Brunswick. He also taught school at Walland High (TN) for two years. Ken had a keen intellect and an extraordinary sense of humor. He entertained those around him and enriched the lives of his family and friends. He was a gifted storyteller and was a devout and humble man who quietly helped countless people during his life. Ken was a member of numerous civic organizations. He was the recipient of Civitan International's highest award the "Shrophire Foundation Trophy." Ken was the author of "History of Athletics at Maryville College." He was named to the Sports Hall of Fame at Maryville College and to the Blount County Sports Hall of Fame in Tennessee. An athletic scholarship was established in his name for his outstanding work for Maryville College. His hobbies included cachet maker of First Day Covers and he was known as the Glynn County citrus man. He is survived by his wife, Angie Faye Lewis Kribbs; two sons, Ken D. Kribbs, Jr. (Sharon) of Franklin, NC. And Keith Douglas Kribbs (Dora) of Salisbury, MD.; a daughter, Kimberly Denise Kribbs of Blue Ridge, GA.; seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren; one brother, Re. David W. Kribbs (Arloa) of Portland, OR; one sister, Doris Jonsson of Kissimmee, FL. And several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers; Gerald L. Kribbs of Lakeland, FL., Rev. Robert E. Kribbs of Westchester, IL., Rev. Donald E. Kribbs of Nashville, TN., and James C. Kribbs, Jr. of Forest City, AK., and a step-son James L. Hendrix, Jr. of Brunswick. Family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at 2:00 pm on Thursday, August 2, 2012 in the chapel of Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home with Rev. Dawn Mayes officiating. Entombment will follow in the Brunswick Memorial Park Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be nephews Tim Brooker, Ronnie Brooker, Glenn Lewis, Danny Lewis, Dennis Lewis and Randy Lewis. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Gilbert, Scott Jury, His Men and Her from First Presbyterian Church, Andy Holder, Dr. Lana Skelton , Dr. Bill Mitchell, Herman Wilkes , Dr. Enrique Fernandez and Tommy Cason In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the First Presbyterian Church of Brunswick or a charity of the donor's choice.
