IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lamar Thaxter
Webb
September 13, 1928 – May 22, 2023
Having fought the good fight and having kept the faith for 94 years, 8 months, and 9 days, Lamar Thaxter Webb finished the race on Monday, May 22, 2023, following a very brief illness. An iconic member of the Glynn County community for over 60 years, Lamar was born the 2nd of twin sons to Ethel and Eugene Webb of Hapeville (the situs of Hartsfield Jackson International Airport), Fulton County, Georgia. The twins and their sister, Faye, spent their childhoods growing up in the family home on property which is now the location of the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library.
Lamar graduated Boys High School in Atlanta before matriculating with his twin brother, Baxter, to the University of Georgia in Athens, where for four years they were members of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and were both voted upon by the student body, which was the custom at the time, to be cheerleaders for the Bulldogs. The twins cheered on championship Bulldog teams in the Cotton, Orange, and Sugar bowls. Following college, the twins enlisted in the military with Baxter going to the Army and Thaxter, as he was known then, to the Air Force where, as a 1st Lieutenant stationed in Point Barrow, Alaska, he helped guard the US's western/USSR eastern border during the Korean war. Prior to his assignment to Point Barrow, Lamar met the girl that became the love of his life, Bettye Jane Jackson, also a Lieutenant in the USAF, while stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Base in Dayton, Ohio. The two continued their courtship after Lamar was assigned to Point Barrow and Bettye Jane was assigned to Ramstein Air base in Kaiserslautern, Germany. Lamar and BJ were married in a quaint service on Dec 6, 1957, in Zurich, Switzerland, where they found an Episcopal (Anglican) Church. Lamar returned to the US to begin graduate architectural studies at Georgia Tech under the GI bill. Unlike at UGA, where as a member of the cheerleading squad he accompanied the Bulldogs to the grid iron, he never attended a game at Tech despite the Yellow Jackets being a football power and National Champions in 1952.
Lamar was recruited from Tech by the Atlanta Architectural firm, Abreu Robeson to open an office on St. Simons Island where the firm hoped to capitalize on the soon to be booming residential growth of the Golden Isles. Lamar left Abreu Robeson and partnered with his friend, Ed Cheshire, to form Webb and Cheshire Architects. Later Lamar would establish Lamar T. Webb Architect AIA, INC, where he worked almost daily to the day of his passing. Lamar stamped his defined style along many Atlantic resort communities including the design and architecture of more than 250 homes on St. Simons and Sea Island. His kindness of heart, passion, and dedication to his craft was not lost upon his many clients, almost all of whom became his and BJ's lifelong friends.
Lamar was a long-time member of Christ Church Frederica, joining the church upon his arrival to the Island in 1959. He constantly worked and volunteered with local community groups to better the Golden Isles, including the St. Simons Jaycees, Golden Isles Duplicate Bridge Club, Island Players, St. Simons Art Association, St. Simons Garden Club, and the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, among many others. He was a devoted husband and a dedicated father assisting BJ raise twins, Robin and Mark, of their own.
Lamar is survived by his two children; Mark Webb and his wife Renee (Rome) and Robin Webb of St Simons Island; his three grandchildren Sydney Galego and Drue Galego of St. Simons Island and Ailsa Webb (Rome); his sister Faye Anderson and her husband Richard (Savannah), niece Melissa Price and her husband Richard (Augusta); sister-in-law Ann Webb (Palm Beach, FL) and other extended family.
He is predeceased by his parents Eugene and Ethel Webb, wife Bettye Jane Webb (December 9, 2010) and his twin brother Eugene Baxter Webb (June 10, 2017).
The family requests that in lieu of flowers any memorial contributions be made to Christ Church Frederica, Arbor Day Foundation or any charity of your choice.
Memorial Services will begin at 10 am, Saturday, May 27, 2023, at Christ Church Frederica.
