Obituary

Leonard Gerald "Jerry" Wright Jerry Wright, 91, of St. Simons Island died Sunday, June 5, 2016 at Marshes Edge. Jerry Wright combined an ultra-successful athletic career as a young man with success in later life at the highest levels of military, business, and civic endeavor. Born in September 1924, Wright was reared near downtown Moultrie. He participated in Dr. R.C. Gresham's sports programs and played for the Moultrie High School Packers from 1939 through 1942. He was a three-sport star leading Packer squads in football, basketball, and baseball. The football and basketball teams of Wright's senior high school year were two of the finest in the history of Colquitt County. The `41-`42 basketball team played its way to the state championship game. Wright was elected All Conference by the South Georgia Football Association and All Conference in basketball. Coach Wallace Butts of the University of Georgia and Coaches W.A. Alexander and Mack Tharpe of Georgia Tech mounted a vigorous recruiting campaign for Wright. He matriculated along with his brother Gene in 1942 at Georgia Tech. Wright entered the U.S. Navy's V-12 program for officer training and transferred with that program to the University of Miami. He played football and basketball for both Georgia Tech and the University of Miami. Wright then attended the U.S. Naval Midshipmen School at Notre Dame. He was commissioned Ensign and assigned as navigator to the USS Bootes in the Central Pacific Theater. He participated in the Philippine Invasion in 1944. Wright has been President and CEO of Family Finance-National Financial and Marketing Corp., Director of Florida National Bank, Partner in Standard Welding, Director of Brunswick First Federal Savings Bank, and President of television station WBSG of Brunswick. He was a member of the Orange Bowl Committee, a member of the Board of Trustees at the University of Miami, and a Director on the University of Miami Sports Foundation board. He was a Director for the Whitfield School at St. Simons, Georgia. Mr. Wright was inducted into the Colquitt County Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Mai Ogden Wright and is survived by his three children, John Robert (Judy) Wright, Sr., Janey Wright (Andy) Sloan and Dottie Lynn Wright (Grady) Gardner, all of St. Simons Island, Georgia; seven grandchildren, Becky (Bin) Brandon of Knoxville, TN; Ann (Justin) Burke of Apison, TN; Aubrey (Shea) Lambert of Simpsonville, KY; John Robert (Liz) Wright of Atlanta; Wright (Joslyn) Sloan; Ogden Sloan and Morgan Wright, all of St. Simons Island; eight great-grandchildren, Gracyn, Lizzie and Finley Brandon of Knoxville, TN; Caroline and Gardner Burke of Apison, TN; Dallas Lambert of Tallahassee, FL and Asher and Declan Lambert of Simpsonville, KY. Family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home. Memorial Service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at St. Simons United Methodist Church. Private entombment will be at Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens.
