Obituary

Lightfoot "Light" Copenhaver Hollingshead-Cook, 77, of St. Simons Island, Ga., died Sunday, Jan. 7, in Brunswick. She was born Nov. 22, 1940, in Charlottesville, Va., to Edwin Henry Copenhaver Jr. and Lightfoot Jordan Copenhaver. She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Peter Hollingshead-Cook; and her brother, Edwin Henry Copenhaver III. She was a graduate of Hollins College in Hollins, Va., and Columbia University in New York. After graduating from Columbia, she worked as an occupational therapist in Virginia. She was a member of Christ Church Frederica on St. Simons Island. She was a passionate horsewoman and learned to ride a horse before she could walk. Throughout her life, she participated in numerous equestrian events and shows. In her later years, she trained and drove horse carriages competitively and at community events. Light was also a skilled golfer and attended the Golf Academy of America in San Diego, Calif. She was a philanthropist, supporting causes like Heroes on Horseback, the Nature Conservancy and the ASPCA. She loved to paint and was an accomplished artist, showing at galleries on St. Simons. She is survived by a son, Peter Hollingshead-Cook II (Mary) of Cary, N.C.; and stepson, Steven Hollingshead-Cook (Joni) of Knoxville, Tenn. She is also survived by her step-grandchildren Matthew Hollingshead-Cook and (Kenya) of Knoxville, Tenn., and Keith Hollingshead-Cook and (Vanessa) of Nashville, Tenn. She also leaves behind her loyal companion, Bridget, as well as many close friends and neighbors. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14 at Marsh's Edge, 136 Marsh's Edge Way, St. Simons Island.
