Obituary

Margaret A. (McCallum) Edwardsen left this world peacefully Monday, June 6 in the home she loved on Jekyll Island, Georgia. Born at home in Nutley, New Jersey, in 1924, Margaret was the youngest child of George McCallum and Edith (Goodall) McCallum. Margaret grew up in New Jersey, spending long summers at the shore. She graduated from Centenary College, and then became a young bride having met her husband H. Buck Edwardsen at the beach in the summer of '42. They married in New Mexico during a short Army Air Force leave. After WWII, 'Mac', as she was known by oldest friends, and husband 'Pug' relocated more than a dozen times in the US and Canada with their growing family before settling in Mt. Lebanon, PA in the 1950's. Outside the home Margaret was a horse back riding enthusiast who adored her mare, "Dolly", a Children's Hospital volunteer, an avid gardener, and a photographer for the Mt. Lebanon News . In 1985, all children grown and gone, Margaret and her husband retired to lovely Jekyll Island having discovered it on a whim during a road trip detour. Numerous family reunions with two additional generations of children exploring the beaches and bike paths followed. After 68 years of marriage, and a long illness, Buck Edwardsen passed in 2012. Margaret is survived by her four children, Leslie (Ed) Hill of Sammamish, WA; Scott (Lori) Edwardsen of Manlius, NY; Rob (Betsy) Edwardsen of Pittsford, NY; Joannie (Chuck) Hinman of East Greenwich, RI; 15 grandchildren and great-grands, and brother George McCallum II. Brother Robert McCallum passed in 2012. The family wishes to acknowledge the friendship and attention of longtime Island neighbors Tise and Devy Eyler and Mary and George Hatchard, and also to extend particular gratitude to compassionate caregiver Nettie Keith with whom Margaret passed many hours in the last 18 months. Margaret will be remembered for her sharp wit, appreciation of a good laugh, pride in her Scottish heritage, astute financial aptitude, and countless quotable quotes. Margaret died a month after her 93rd birthday, on which she remarked, "I don't recommend anything past 89." A memorial service will be held at Jekyll Community Presbyterian Church Saturday, June 17 at 10am. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the charity of your choice, or to one of Margaret's favorites - The Salvation Army. Golden Isles Creation Center and Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home are in charge of arrangements.
