Obituary

Marie Davis Schoettle of Darien, Georgia passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday February 8, 2013. Marie was 70, born on May 14, 1942. She was the only daughter and youngest of four children of James Kennedy Davis and Ellen Waln Harrison Davis, residing in Philadelphia, PA and Cape May, NJ. Marie's father gave her the nickname of 'Cricket' as a result of all of her energy demonstrated in a quiet determined way, a characteristic that stayed with her throughout her life. Marie spent many of her summers in Cape May and became a champion sailor for the Moth class of sailboats at the Corinthian Yacht Club. She attended The Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, PA. Marie married H.E. Taylor Schoettle on August 18, 1962 while an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania, and then graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor's degree in math and philosophy. Marie and Taylor went on to have four sons, and lived in Philadelphia, PA; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Oklahoma City, OK; El Paso, TX; Waycross, GA; St. Simons Island, GA, and finally settling for the last 20 years in Darien which they made their home. Early in their marriage, Marie devoted her time to nurturing her sons to be independent and self-reliant, cultivating a stimulating environment with events such as neighborhood plays she would direct with her sons and other children. Later she dedicated her time and energy to teaching math and religion at St. Francis Xavier School. Marie was a lifelong teacher with a passion for education. She partnered with Taylor by taking a principle editing role for his writings and books. Marie and Taylor recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Marie possessed a true servant's heart, she faithfully gave of herself in every aspect of her life. She dedicated her time and energy to serving the Catholic community in coastal Georgia, where she loved writing, teaching and being involved with youth. She created Open Wednesdays as a web site to assist Catholic parents and teachers to prepare young people for Mass by presenting the readings and program on Wednesday so that they could prepare for the Mass on Sunday. People from all across the world engaged with Open Wednesdays and communicated by email with Marie. Throughout her life, Marie reached out to people in need and provided an environment to help them get on track towards independence. She recognized the value in respect for other's feelings. In 2009 Marie founded and opened St. Ann's Yard Sale Store, a foundational nonprofit thrift store serving the Darien and McIntosh County community with the mission to provide nice clothing and household items inexpensively and to assist with financial needs for struggling families. She passionately supported the volunteers at St. Ann's. Marie will be deeply missed as the center of her family. She is survived by her husband Taylor and their four sons Chris (Sarah) of Boston, MA; John (Christin) of Savannah, GA; David of Hobe Sound, FL; and Steve (Sandy) of St. Simons Island, GA and five grandchildren with whom she invested so much of herself. She is also survived by her three older brothers Jim Davis, Charlie Davis, and Bob Davis and their extended families with whom she remained close. The funeral service will be on Saturday February 16 at 10am at Nativity of Our Lady church in Darien. There will be a visitation from 6 to 8pm on Friday February 15 at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home, 4407 Highway 17 North.
