Obituary

The most amazing woman in the world passed quietly into the arms of Jesus with her children by her side on May 15, 2022. She was 93. Maveleene Lee Scarboro Gantt was born April 14, 1929 to Beulah and Lonnie Scarboro in Albemarle, NC. A feisty red headed beauty, she lived life with laughter and love for everyone. Maveleene met and married the love of her life, William "Bill" Miles Gantt, Sr. in 1948 and they had four children together. In 1972, after years helping Bill in their natural gas business in Southern Pines, NC, they moved to St. Simons Island, GA and opened The Peddler Steak House with oldest daughter Marilyn and her late husband Chip Worthington. In 1977 they changed the name of their restaurant to Gantt's Steak and Seafood continuing the tradition of good food and service until they closed in 1983. Mae and Bill continued to live, work and play on St. Simons enjoying their many hours at Malcolm McKinnon airport doing what they loved most-flying! Mae got her pilots license and they were off into the wild blue yonder. Sadly, Bill passed away in 1997 and in 1999 Mae moved to Spruce Creek Fly in Community in Port Orange, Florida continuing her love for flying and airplanes until her death. Mae made every day special for her family and friends but birthdays and holidays were her specialty with her over the top, decadent deserts that dazzled us all. Left to cherish her memory are daughters Marilyn Gantt Worthington, Wilmington, NC; Patricia Gantt Pate (Randy), Ocean Isle, NC; Susan Gantt Whitfield (fiance Duncan Shelby), St. Simons Island, GA; son William Miles Gantt, Jr. (Kelly Michael), Port Orange, FL; grandchildren Shelly Nicole (Nikki) Whitfield Kennedy, Kingsland, GA; Frank S. Worthington (Leah), Clayton, NC; Lauren Pate, Wilmington, NC;.Tiffany Whitfield Rice (Don), Bedford, PA; David Pate (Mandy), Ocean Isle, NC; Matthew Worthington, Wilmington, NC; great grandchildren Justin Kennedy, Kingsland, GA; Greyson Pate, Wilmington, NC; Nicholas Kennedy, Brunswick, GA; Paris Kennedy Fay (Derrick), Kingsland, GA; Avery Worthington, Clayton, NC; Great-great grandchildren Journey Rae Kennedy, Brunswick, GA; Dominic Fay, Kingsland, GA; Luca Fay, Kingsland, GA; sister Sheila Scarboro Payne, Virginia Beach, VA; brothers David Scarboro, Albemarle, NC; Robert Scarboro (Amy), Albemarle, NC. Special thanks to Randee Laskewitz/Johnson, mom's neighbor who visited our mom in her assisted living facility and hospital faithfully! Funeral services will be held at the Oglethorpe Gardens chapel on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at 11:00 am with Dr. Wright Culpepper officiating.
