Obituary

Maynard David Harrison, 82, a proud resident of the Golden Isles, passed from this world to the next on August 10th, 2023, at Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick, Georgia. Born in East London, England in 1940 during the bombing of London in World War 2, Maynard met the love of his life Valerie when he was 15 years old at a local fair. During his time in England, he excelled at stock car racing and honed his skills as a certified auto technician. He also fell in love with rock n roll and was a lifelong fan of Elvis, Roy Orbison, The Beatles and The Stones. In 1961 Maynard and Valerie married at St. Margrets Church in Barking, Essex England where Capt. James Cook was also married 200 years before. They gave birth to three sons, Stephen Maynard Harrison in 1962, Christopher John Harrison in 1966 and Anthony James Harrison in 1968. Thanks to his hard work and desire to experience the American way of life, Maynard and the family immigrated to the US in 1973, specifically Kings Terrace on Saint Simons Island, where his brother Norman and sister Jaquline were residing at the time. For three decades he worked as a lead technician at Sea Island garage. He also served as a volunteer firefighter alongside his brother Norman with the Saint Simons Fire Department. In 1980 he took a break from Sea Island and started, owned and operated the Horses Head Pub on St. Simons Island which became a prominent lively local establishment where many colorful local characters made good friends, shared some drinks and met the love of their lives. The Pub featured weekly dart and pool tournaments, new video games such as Pac Man and Asteroids, and live rock shows with some of the best regional bands during the early days of MTV and was an exciting and fun place where dozens of locals and British family members came to socialize and enjoy a great time. In 1988 Maynard and Valerie moved to Riverside on the mainland where he chose to retire and enjoy life boating, fishing, playing golf, sharing bar stories with friends and traveling with Valerie on dozens of cruises all over the world. He spent hundreds of days at sea and was fortunate enough to see and explore the Far East, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, South America, Europe, The Caribbean, North Africa, Hawaii, Alaska and all places in America in between, yet he was always simply comfortable enjoying the beautiful view of the river and marshes from his home in the Golden Isles with Valerie by his side. He lived a life truly fulfilled and surrounded by six grandchildren who loved to laugh and joke with him and hear him tell the stories of his early life in England. Maynard is preceded in death by his parents Jack and Kathleen Harrison and his son Anthony James Harrison. He is survived by his wife Valerie, his sons Stephen (Kes) Harrison and Christopher (Elena) Harrison, his grandchildren, Dylan, Bradley, Elizabeth, Liam, Max and Chloe, his great grandchildren Brayleigh and Cruz. Thanks to a genealogy search, in his last years he was informed that he was a direct descendent of the famous British parliamentarian Sir John Maynard (1604-1690), who attended the Middle Temple in London under the reign of King Charles II. Realizing this excited him to no end and the family joked with him that he was now officially King Maynard. :) He left a magical mark on this wonderful world, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him, especially the love of his life Valerie. "You gave us all a great life dad and we thank you for it from the depth of our hearts, rest easy now King Maynard".
