Michael F. Purnell, 81, died on August 25, 2023, at Southeast Georgia Health Systems in Brunswick, surrounded by family.

He was born in Washington to the late Irving and Mary Clark Purnell of Occoquan, Virginia.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Christa Kinack Purnell.

They moved to Brunswick in 1980 and in 1981 opened The Body Shop.

He loved to play golf and was an avid old car guy, especially muscle cars.

He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

Also surviving are sons, Michael I. Purnell, Stephen Purnell of Brunswick, and Christopher Purnell of New York City, and daughter, Alicia Head (Kalem) of Brunswick. Five grandchildren, Ian M. Purnell, Rachael Zaccagnino, Amanda Purnell, and the lights of his life, Emma and Ellie Head; brothers, Thomas Purnell of Woodbridge, VA., John Purnell (Anne) of Pinehurst, NC., and sister, Marianne Kernan (Gen. Buck, USA Ret.) of Pinehurst, NC; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by brother, James Purnell, and sister, Elizabeth Swink.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home. Visitation is one hour before. In lieu of flowers make donations to the Linden Lodge Foundation, 2251 Linden Rd, Aberdeen, NC 28315.
