Obituary

Michael Eugene Smith of Saint Simons Island, Georgia passed away peacefully at The Hospice of The Golden Isles in Brunswick, Georgia early in the morning on December 7, 2020. Mike was born on February 7, 1946, to Lois Dunford Smith and Joseph Edgar Smith of Savannah, Georgia. He was a graduate of Savannah High School. Mike married Savannah native, Pamela Jeanne Newton and they moved to Atlanta, Georgia where Mike attended Georgia State University and worked at WSB News. Mike and Pamela then moved to High Point, North Carolina where Mike worked for the Mirro Products Company. Mike and Pamela were blessed with two sons and moved back to Atlanta to their longtime residence in the Murphy Candler Park neighborhood. Mike then founded his own graphics printing and retail display company, The Display Works, Inc. Mike ended his career at Miller Zell where he had also worked when he first moved to Atlanta. Mike retired to Saint Simons Island, Georgia in 2017 where he was often found golfing and working part time at Sea Island Golf Club. Mike was a faithful Episcopalian singing at times in church choirs as a member of Saint Martin's in the Fields Episcopal Church in Brookhaven, Georgia, Church of the Epiphany in Decatur, Georgia and Holy Nativity Episcopal Church on Saint Simons Island. Known by his grandchildren as "Pappy" and his close friends as "Mikey" he will long be remembered for his family weather updates, his special moves on the dance floor, singing around the piano, his unique dinner time blessings, his devotion to Ole Miss and UGA college football and his genuine love for countless family and friends. Mike was predeceased by his parents Edgar and Lois Smith, his wife of more than 50 years Pamela Newton Smith, his sister-in-law Jude P. Smith and his brother Joseph Braxton Smith. He is survived by his sons Michael Todd Smith of Saint Simons Island, Georgia and Elliott Braxton Smith of Atlanta, Georgia, daughter-in-law Missy Duncan Smith, grandchildren Ada Smith Parker, Anne Braxton Smith, James Cole Smith and Katherine Lee Smith, two nieces and one nephew, sister-in-law Kathy Pigott and brother-in-law Jerry Pigott of Louisiana. Following cremation, a memorial service is to be held this Saturday, January 9th at 3:00 at Holy Nativity Episcopal Church. Saint Simons Island. The family requests memorials and contributions be made to Holy Nativity Episcopal Church, 615 Mallery Street, Saint Simons Island, Georgia 31522.
