Obituary

Nanci Kaye Kelman, 80, devoted wife, mother, and luminous creative spirit, passed away at the Brunswick Senior Care Center on Monday, July 20, 2020. She was born in Savannah on November 1st, 1939, and lived her entire life in the warm embrace of the Georgia seacoast, salt marshes, and sea breezes. As a native of Savannah, Nanci had an ardent appreciation of all things historic and traditional, including the old Savannah houses that she lived in, restored, and decorated. She loved to search the old waterfront warehouses for antique furniture, and was highly skilled at bringing dusty, forgotten old pieces, including an antique pump organ, back to their original splendor. Nanci also worked as a tour guide at the Telfair Museum, where her natural Southern grace never failed to charm guests from near and far. Coming from an artistic family, Nanci had a natural affinity for all things creative, including music, dance, cooking, and especially fashion. As a child she was an accomplished dancer, and performed Vaudeville in New York. She was an avid radio listener and record collector, and especially liked the blues music of the 1950's and the groundbreaking music of artists such as Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder and the Bee Gees. She was an accomplished seamstress, sewing most of her own clothes, and loved to cook for the family. Nanci's holiday family dinners are fondly remembered, as well as her baking and creative Italian cooking. Above all, Nanci was a loving wife and mother of three children. Her family never lived far from the saltwater beaches and waterways, where idyllic summers were spent swimming, boating, fishing, and crabbing. Tybee Beach, Hilton Head, and St. Simons Island were favorite summer destinations. Nanci also loved her pets, including the well-pampered Siamese and Persian cats who were her constant companions. Ms. Kelman is survived by three children, Joe Page Jr. of Ellijay (wife Karen), Melanie Page of Brunswick, and Amanda Leavy of Valdosta (husband Paul), grandchildren Alex Page, Wymberley Leavy, and Grayson Leavy, and sister Melisa Brooks of Long Beach California.
