Reverend George Lawton Chaney, 81 better known as "Papa" by many who loved him went to be with the Lord, Monday evening April 28th. He was surrounded by his family in his beloved pink home as his brief battle with cancer came to a close. He had been a resident of Brunswick since 1954 and was employed as a fitter-welder at Babcock & Wilcox and Griffis Steel. However, Papa was most proud of the work he did in the service for the Lord as a Pastor in the community for the past 23 years. He was a Veteran of World War II, having served in the U S Navy. He also was a member of American Legion #9 and the Adult 3 Sunday School Class. He is survived by his son, Charles (Laverne) Chaney of Waynesville and 4 grandchildren-Ava (Roy) Conner, James (Amanda) Chaney, Cindy (Wayne) Cox, and the granddaughter he raised Mandy (Bill) Moore, nine great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Papa was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Lois Chaney, a daughter, Sue Chambers and granddaughter, Enola Gay Chaney. Funeral Services will be held Friday at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home with burial following, with military honors in Brunswick Memorial Park Cemetery. Pastor Sammy Chaney, Brother Charles Smith and Brother Alvin Gill will be officiating. Ceremony music will be provided by Brother Tommy Whaley. Visitation will be Thursday night, 6:00-8:00 PM in the Chapel of the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Hospice of the Golden Isles or the Pine Haven Baptist Church Building Fund. Pallbearers will be, Jim Page, Christopher Kennedy, Michael Kennedy, Kyle Young, James Scott and Joe Scott. Honorary Pallbearers are Mr. & Mrs. Rowland, Jerry Crews Sr., Chris and Gail Kennedy, Donald and Billy Shuman, Harry Griffis, Fred Griffis Clem Griffis, Members of Pine Haven Baptist Church, Dr. Moores and Staff, Dr. Amie and Staff, Glenda Young-Williams, and Hospice of the Golden Isles.
