Obituary

Richard Dewey Hicks, 79, of Brunswick, completed his earthly journey on June 19th surrounded by loving family. Born in Hopewell, New Jersey on May 27th 1936 to Dorothea and Admiral Dewey Hicks, he was one of seven siblings who were raised to cherish family. This love and devotion was evident throughout life and passed down to each of their own families. Richard enlisted in the Army and proudly served his country as a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. Upon retirement from the military in 1974, Richard worked for the US Postal Service. While stationed in Germany, Richard met and married German beauty Ingrid Dannenmann. Their fifty one year marriage produced four children- Michael Hicks (Sally), Susan Goodin, Karen Rowell (Terry) and Laura Hicks. He was predeceased by Ingrid and Laura, his parents, sisters Jean and Jeannette, step brother Charlie, brother Bobby, step father Charlie Groves, nephew's Mark and Anthony, and great niece Alyssa. Richard was happiest spending time with his family and friends, and enjoyed traveling, dancing, dining, reading, and classical movies. He had an intense thirst for knowledge since early childhood, reading an entire set of encyclopedias in grade school. He acquired an extensive knowledge of history and was fluent in several languages. He was fiercely protective of and generous to his family and friends. Nothing could deter Richard from realizing a goal when his mind was set. He had a gift for gab, never met a stranger, and was intensely proud of his grandchildren Andrew, Alex, Jessica, Hillary, Adrienne and Matthew and great-grands Evan and Elyssa and he was their hero. He is survived by brothers Fred (Lucille); Calvin (Cathy), Sal, his sister, Roberta (Tony), step father Frank Sommers, and dozens of special nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Richard will be held at the chapel of Brunswick Memorial Park on Tuesday, June 23 at 11 am. Pastor Larry Daughtry will officiate. His final resting place will be beside his beloved wife and daughter. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles.
