Ronald Lewis Yost was born in Craig, CO to Lawrence and Joyce Yost (nee Young). He grew up in Craig, and later in Dallas and Port Arthur, TX. Ron graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur in 1952 and earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology, with Minors in Chemistry and Psychology, from Lamar University in 1957. He served in the Texas National Guard from 1957-1962.
Ron married Pauline Elizabeth White (Bettie) in Sylacauga, AL on July 31, 1960. They raised three daughters, Kim, Elizabeth (Gita), and Joyce (Jo), in Winston-Salem, NC. Ron and Bettie were active members of Ardmore United Methodist Church and several social justice organizations. They enjoyed welcoming NC School of the Arts students and others to their dinner table on a regular basis.
Ron spent most of his career with the National Labor Relations Board, reaching the position of Supervisory Examiner, retiring in 1995. He turned down several opportunities for further advancement within the NLRB because he and Bettie loved living and raising their family in Winston-Salem. During his retirement, Ron volunteered with Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County, and as a mentor for struggling elementary school students.
Ron took loving care of Bettie during her years of failing health between 2001 and her death in 2006, and he moved to Brunswick, GA in 2008 to be near his grandson, Matthew. In Brunswick, Ron met and married retired pediatrician Jean Cardin in 2009. They joined the Marsh's Edge Community on St. Simons Island in 2014.
Ron, along with Jean, was an active member of Unitarian Universalists of Coastal Georgia and volunteered with Hospice of the Golden Isles. He was a long-time wood worker and designed and built a chalice table and pulpit for UUCG in 2009. Ron also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity of Glynn County; he built shelves for their ReStore in Brunswick and later donated his wood shop to Habitat.
Ron is survived by his wife, Dr. Jean Cardin of St. Simons Island, his daughters, Kim Merck (Brian) of Brunswick, Gita Yost of Grand Junction, CO, and Joyce Ulrich (Steve) of Houston, TX, a step-daughter, Leslie Cardin, of SSI, his grandson, Matthew Lewis Merck, his sister, Anna Lou Stewart (Randy) of Beaumont, TX, as well as much-loved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family is grateful to all Ron's caregivers during his last days at Marsh's Edge, Addington Place, and Hospice of the Golden Isles, including caregivers from FirstLight Home Care. A service to celebrate Ron Yost's life is planned for a future date in Brunswick, GA. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, towards a future cure for this devastating disease.
