Obituary

Vernell Grovner was granted her angel wings on July 13, 2014. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that Vernell had touched in some way throughout her very memorable life. She was born April 21, 1942, in Sapelo, Georgia to James and Rosa Mills. Her father preceded her in death during her childhood, and her mother died at the age of 89. Vernell grew up on the island of Sapelo with her 5 siblings and eventually, moved to Florida with family to continue her high school education. Throughout her teen years, she visited Saint Simons Island, and met her loving husband, David Grovner at the age of 18. Upon completion of high school, she attended Savannah State College for one year. In 1963, she married David Grovner and they had 2 sons. She worked for the Glynn County School District as a Cafeteria Manager for Saint Simons Island and during the summer would care for the elderly in nursing homes and personal homes. David worked at Hercules. They both retired, yet Vernell continued to work as a personal sitter. Vernell was an active member of First AB Church of Saint Simons Island as a choir member and worked with the Breast Cancer Society after surviving Breast Cancer for almost 11 years. While in church she met her best friends Phyllis Wilson, Geraldine Davis and Almarie Hutcherson, along with many other friends and extended family members. Her interest included family, cooking, baking, watching baseball, caring for others and traveling. She devoted much of her time and energy as a caregiver to family members and others, including her mother until she passed away at the age of 89. Mrs. Grovner is survived her husband, David Grovner; her sisters, Sarah Edmunds and Lucille Banks and Ester; brother John Mills; 2 sons and their spouses, David and Andrea Grovner, Curtis and Cornelia Grovner; and 2 grandchildren David Andrew Grovner and Wesley Hughes; Cousin Denise Johnson Parham and sister in law Audrey Grovner and a host of nieces and nephews.
