Obituary

Virlan Lewis, 85, left this earthly home and made the journey to his Heavenly home on Thursday, September 6, 2018. He was born in Register, Georgia on March 30, 1933 to Vonzie and Ruby Lewis. He graduated from Register High School in 1951 as the "Star of the basketball team". He loved playing the game and would stop the car anywhere he saw someone shooting hoops, get out, introduce himself, and asked to join in. At 70 years old, he was still showing the young men "how it's done" with his 3-shots! Many times I've heard him say he wished he had pursued a pro status career. He was also one of the best at shooting pool… just ask his wrecker buddies. He joined the Air Force right after high school and was deployed to Korea where he served as Military Police during the Korean Conflict. On his second tour of duty to Korea, he was a member of the Air Force semi-pro basketball league. He was Honorably discharged in 1955. Everyone who knew Virlan was aware of his unique sense of humor, especially his wife! He was well-known and respected throughout the community, because of the variety of businesses he owned. He began his career with Lewis Chemical Company and continued with Star Recovery Systems, Sterling Auto Sales, Brunswick Memorial Park Cemetery, Granny and Andy's Restaurant, Manning Recovery Service and Graceland Portable Buildings, all of Brunswick. Virlan is survived by his wife of 34 years, Linda (Underwood), two sons, Chuck (Kim) and Zane, a step-daughter, Rhonda (Tim) and a step-son, Bubba (Stephanie), who he always considered his own children; all of Brunswick. He was a loving Papa to all of his grandchildren, Jamie, Katie, Brittany, Ben, Mary, Brandon, Elizabeth, Harrison and Olivia. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Dean and his son, Duane. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, September 10, 2018, at Bay Harbor Church of God at Hwy 82 and 303, with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. and services beginning at 3:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Earl Lamey, Rev. Bobby Tatum, Rev. Tommy Whaley and Rev. Monroe Gill. Active pallbearers will be Ben Lewis, Brandon Hutchinson, Clyde Underwood, Rudy Underwood, Ricky Underwood and Leslie Rooks. Honorary pallbearers will be C. R. Ogden, L.A. Varnadoe, Marcello Vercillo, Steve Starling, Henry Allen, Horace Daniels, Jeff Emery, JoJo Whorton, Lee Funderburk, Billy Waters, Les Long and Tony Lane and all of his friends from the Huddle House on Hwy 341.
