Obituary

Wayne Pope Johnson, age 84, of Brunswick, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida.

Wayne was born April 11, 1939 in Omega, Georgia, a son of Frank and Doris Marie Pope Johnson, and at 6 yrs old he and his family moved to Unadilla, GA. He married his high school sweetheart, Margaret King on June 21, 1959. In 1965, he moved his family to the Brunswick area where he went to work for the Georgia DOT. Wayne was a member of Taylors Methodist Church and was very instrumental in helping build the preschool/daycare there called "Taylors Tots". Mr. Johnson retired from the Georgia DOT after 32 years and The Army National Guard after 22 years. He owned shrimp boats all his life and after retirement he went shrimping full time. He enjoyed traveling and camping in their RV and never missed a chance to load up and go. Wayne dearly loved his wife and girls actually naming each of his shrimp boats after each daughter..

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of 64 1/2 years, Margaret King Johnson; four daughters, Sherrie Traylor (Tom), Tina H. Gill (Jerome), Nanette Johnson, and Tonya Dailey; two grandchildren, Jennifer Hendley (Bryan) and Michael Kennedy; two great-grandchildren, Hope Hendley and Harper Hendley; brother, Frank Randall Johnson Jr. (Barbara), sister, Joyce Jones, and special sister-in-law Peggy Bumpus. He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Frank Randall and Doris Pope Johnson Sr. and one brother, Dean Mark Johnson.

Visitation will be Monday, October 30th, 2023 from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM at the funeral home. Funeral Service will be held Monday, October 30, 2023, 2:00 PM at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home, with Brother Jim Emery and Brother Jim Mcllrath officiating. Burial will follow at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home in Brunswick.

Honorary pallbearer will be Mr. Roy Rocha, Mr. Wayne's friend and neighbor of 38 years; Active pallbearers will be Michael Kennedy, Bryan Hendley, Tom Traylor, Jerome Gill, Todd Rocha, and Butch Lane.
