Obituary

Wayne Joseph Vachon, age 66, of White Oak, Georgia, passed away on October 16, 2025, in Brunswick, Georgia.

Wayne was born on February 1, 1959, in Norwich, Connecticut, to Wilfred D. and Noel M. Vachon. At the age of 15, he moved to Brunswick, Georgia, with his mother and stepfather following his stepfather's retirement from the U.S. Navy Submarine Service. While attending Brunswick High School in 1976, Wayne met his best friend and the love of his life, Cindy. The two were married later that same year and began their 48 year journey together, building a life filled with love, laughter, and devotion.

In 1978, Wayne joined the U.S. Navy, a career that would take him and Cindy across the country. During his service, he served on the USS George Washington Carver (SSBN-656), USS Francis Scott Key (SSBN-657), Mobile Technical Unit-14 (MOTU-14) in Kings Bay, Tampa Military Processing Station, and the USS Nebraska (SSBN-739). Wayne excelled in his naval career as a highly proficient Chief Petty Officer, Sonar Supervisor, and Command Career Counselor. He was later advanced to the rank of Senior Chief Sonar Technician. His meticulous attention to detail, strong work ethic, and empathy toward others earned him the respect and admiration of all who served alongside him. These same qualities helped him transition seamlessly into civilian life after retirement.

After retiring from the Navy, Wayne brought his many skills and creativity to new endeavors. He spent several years with Golden Isles Granite, mastering every aspect of the craft—from fabrication to installation. He later worked at Home Depot, where he enjoyed sharing his knowledge, forming friendships with coworkers and contractors, and, of course he was one of their biggest customers. Eventually, he started his own home improvement business, where his craftsmanship, ingenuity, dependability, and integrity earned him a stellar reputation across Glynn County, St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island, and Camden County.

Wayne and Cindy built a beautiful life together and were blessed with three children: Mauri B. Swilley of Brunswick, GA; Jason M. Vachon of White Oak, GA; and Chelsea L. Sherrill (Nathan) of St. Marys, GA. A dedicated and devoted family man, Wayne was profoundly thankful for the life the Lord had given him. He beamed with pride whenever he spoke of his grandchildren—Kayla M. Swilley, Kalisidy N. Swilley, Alaina J. Sherrill, Lyla R. Sherrill, Tyler H. Sherrill—and his great-granddaughter, Milani S. Brown. His sense of humor, a true "family gene," is unmistakably carried on by his children and grandchildren, as is his deep compassion and love for others.

Wayne had a passion for building and used his creativity to personalize projects, collaborating with others to ensure every client was satisfied. He was a talented craftsman, a great cook, and a lifelong fan of football—especially his beloved New England Patriots. Back in the day, he was a proud "roadie" for the local band Brothers and Sisters, a time filled with friendship and music that he fondly remembered throughout his life. Wayne also shared an unshakable bond with his many in-laws, each of whom he truly loved as brothers and sisters. He held a special place in his heart for his nieces and nephews, who all adored their "Uncle Wayne" for his warmth and playfulness.

Known for his quick wit, unmistakable humor, and the signature twinkle in his eye that always came with a big smile, Wayne could light up any room. He was truly as wonderful on the inside as he was on the outside—a man of rare character whose laughter, kindness, and love will live on forever in the hearts of all who knew him.

Wayne was preceded in death by his father, Wilfred Vachon, mother, Noel Vachon Frantz, and brother, William J. Vachon.

He is survived by his wife Cindy Vachon; children, Mauri B. Swilley, Jason M. Vachon, Chelsea L. Sherrill (Nathan); 5 grandchildren, Kayla M. Swilley, Kalisidy N. Swilley, Alaina J. Sherrill, Lyla R. Sherrill, and Tyler H. Sherrill; and 1 great grandchild, Milani S. Brown.
