Obituary

William K. Carter (Kay) passed away on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at his home in Mount Olive, Alabama. Kay was born in 1925 at Carter Nine Oil Field in Northern Oklahoma. He was attending high school in Antelope, Texas when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Although he was only 16 years old, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in early 1942. He served in the pacific during WWII, and fought in battles for Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Guam and Okinawa where he was wounded in action and earned the Purple Heart. During the Korean War, he fought in battles for Inchon, Seoul, Wonsan and Chosin where he was again wounded in action, earning his second Purple Heart. During the 21 years he served in the Marine Corps he was stationed around the country from Maine to the Gulf Coast and from the East Coast to the West Coast. He was also deployed to various hot spots around the world, including Cuba during the missile crisis in 1962. In 1964, when he retired from the Marine Corps, he moved to Brunswick, Georgia where he went to work as a security guard for Brunswick Pulp and Paper (now known as Georgia Pacific) until he retired. He was married to Elizabeth Cole of Woodbine, Georgia for 57 years until her death in 2004. They had 4 children. In 2005, he married Blanche Hope of Jesup, Georgia. In 2014, he and Blanche moved to Mount Olive, Alabama, where he lived until his death. Kay was preceded in death by Elizabeth Cole Carter, his wife of 57 years and his son, William Kay Carter, Jr. He is survived by his wife Blanche, his sons, Robert Bruce Carter of Oklahoma and John Cole Carter of Georgia, his daughter Susan Carter Dunn of Maryland, his niece Renae Van Vranken, his grandchildren Robert Carter, Joseph Carter, Catherine Carter, Erin Meola, Thomas Hutson and Matthew Dunn and 4 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by Blanche's daughter Gerry Schmid of Alabama, 2 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Thursday, September 28, 2017 from 6-8 p.m., at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home in Brunswick, with burial at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 29, 2017 at Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Mary's, Georgia. Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
