William E. Dettmer, 87, died January 15, 2008 at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick, Georgia. He was a resident of Crescent, Georgia. Born in Tonawanda, NY on June 2, 1920, Bill graduated from Tonawanda High School Class of 1939. He attended the University of Kentucky at Louisville. As a young man, Bill was active in Boy Scouts of America and the U.S. Coast Guard on Lake Erie and the Niagara River. Bill served in the military during World War II with the 8th Army in the Asiatic Pacific. During his working years as a Mechanical Engineer, he managed Division Offices for the company in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Chicago. ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬After retiring early in 1975, he and his wife Betty then traveled around the U.S., Mexico, and Canada ~ until settling down in Crescent, Georgia in 1982. Bill established Dettmer Woodcrafts and worked in his woodshop creating and selling his products on the internet. Surviving are: his wife Betty Jane Dettmer of Crescent, GA; daughters: Helen Gates (Jack) of Anaheim CA and Deborah Kotzian (Bob) of Rathdrum ID; sons: William E. Dettmer III of Savannah GA and Gregory Lee Dettmer of Bluffton SC; 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; Predeceased by daughter Lynn R. Allen; The family will receive visitors at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 21, 2008 with the Rev. Dr. Felix Haynes presiding. Interment will be at a later date in Georgia Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Glennville.
